Details:
Alex Cattaneo is guitarist, composer, writer and producer residing in Montreal, Canada.

After completing a degree in Jazz performance and arranging at Vanier College, Alex studied with the legendary Mick Goodrick in Boston. Upon his return to Montreal, a collaboration with vocalist Coral Egan led to the album The Path of Least Resistance, released in 2002. The duet went on to perform at the Montreal Jazz Festival, opening for John Pizarelli and headlining their own sell-out concert at the Club Soda, as well as a plethora of radio and television performances: Le plaisir croit avec l’usage, Les choix de Sophie, ArtTV, Bravo!, Festival of Stars (Global TV), Musimax, Aux arts etc, C’est bien meilleur le matin et Montreal-Express. The album eventually gathered a Juno nomination for best vocal jazz album in 2003.

That same year, Alex went on to study classical indian music with Uwe Neuman and Aditya Verma. His curiosity for the rhythmic vocabulary of karnatic and hindustani traditions led to a collaboration with multi-percussionist Ganesh Anandan. Along with Patrick Graham, Jean Sabourin and Pascal Per Veillette, they recorded Asa Nisi Masa, which was released in 2005. The project explored the frontiers of jazz, rock, folk and karnatic music and was described as a “bizarro-world future primitive blues jam, ornate and esoteric” by music critic Rupert Bottenberg. The band made an appearance on “Carte blanche à Isabelle Blais” in 2006 and recorded an hour-long concert for Bravo! in 2007. The ensemble was also selected for a tour sponsored by the Montreal Arts Council.

Another project, dubbed Absinthe, started out as a tribute to oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, who himself was quite impressed with Alex’s transcriptions of his complex music. The ensemble, entirely composed of acoustic instruments, eventually moved to a completely original repertoire penned by Cattaneo. The group’s first album will be released in march 2009 during a series of concerts at Montreal Arts Interculturels, which will be recorded by the CBC.

A versatile instrumentist, Alex plays in a wide range of contexts, including sideman work with the Mai Tai Orchestra (polynesian music), Bartula (serbo-croat) and Lauren Posner [https://www.tradebit.com](jewish traditional/world-beat). He also fronts his own honly-tonk band, Les Roturiers [https://www.tradebit.com], with whom he released a debut album in 2007, La République.

Alex now mostly works as a producer. Aside from producing his own projects (Asa Nisi Masa, Absinthe and Les Roturiers), Alex was called upon to put together a tribute to French singer Nino Ferrer, for which he produced and arranged 13 songs with an impressive roster of gifted young Québec artists. The album will be released in the spring of 2009 by Spectra Musique. He’s currently producing Massiel Yanira’s debut album, on which he plays various guitars, mandolin and ukulele.

As a writer, he is a steady contributor to Muzik etc. for which he writes educational columns since 2004. His first series of 12 installments explored the ins and outs of odd meters, while his latest work deals with creativity.
