Life In A Coma is ask for joy''s third EP, weaving simple pop melodies over richly textured layered guitars, keyboards and harmony vocals.
The album begins with the hopeful, exuberant ''Here She Comes'' and follows with a pair of devotions and rememberances of passion past through the fuzzy, enveloping guitar shimmer of ''Summercrush'' and ''Heaven In You''. The deep reverb on the drum beat of ''My Deepest Ocean'' propels a treacly love song whose mellifluous harmonies sing as much the praises of its subject as do the lyrics. ''Pull My String'' and ''The Sacrifice'' anchor a turn towards darker subjects, all the while maintaining the same Beach Boys-meet-Slowdive by way of The Jesus And Mary Chain sound. Finally, ''Glory Glory'' is a prayer thrown up to the heavens, perhaps in desperation, through gospel-tinged hand claps, foot stamps and pipe organ drone that accompany the background choir and lead vocal invoking the beatific.
ask for joy is a songwriter, performer and producer in Austin, Texas. Making heavy use of lush, long reverbs of repetitive guitar chords and minimalist, simplistic drum patterns, the music draws comparisons to early 1990s shoegaze-era bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, et cetera. However, many musical styles and earlier influences inform ask for joy''s music.
Uncomplicated lyrics, melodies and sweet vocal harmonies are couched in hypnotizing drum machine loops and waves of heavily effected guitars and analog keyboards to create a hazy, atmospheric, textured and dense dream pop sound.
Life In A Coma is preceded by 2005''s Swoon EP, released digitally, and 2007''s Endless Space Unfurled EP.
