Details:
Daniel Bennett is a self taught guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, picking up any instrument he can get his hands on, bending it to his will. He''s experimented with various mixes of instruments and sounds, using field recordings and found sounds frequently to add feeling to the music.
Never monotonous, the music tells stories, with changes; some subtle, some hard-hitting, to create an enthralling and attention keeping soundscape that is quite hard to put a genre to..

Here''s a review to his 2006 effort: "Apple" ...

Apple: A review by Chris Geddes

When one comes to write an instrumental album, you must recognise the subtle differences between instrumental albums and song albums. This is often a fact that many artists miss when making a instrumental album. Guitar greats like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen have all tried to produce instrumental works, but have always failed to get my complete attention. The problem has always been that the songs would always degenerate into pointless 5 min long solos, whose only purpose was to fill in time, and serve the artist''s egos. Not since Liquid Tension Experiment, have I found an instrumental rock album that was not just an artist''s ego trip.

Enter Daniel Bennett, with Apple. I believe that what Daniel has created sits head and shoulders above all the other "guitar" albums, and is up there with the legendary LTE. Daniel is a virtually unknown polytech student from Dunedin, New Zealand. He is unsigned, producing all his music at home on his computer with his 12 (around that) guitars. Apple is his third effort, with his other two suffering from poor production quality.

The album begins with Release, which starts with a guitar lead over this cool swell sound. This turns into a really cool little song, with good use of keyboards in the background. This song also has good use of panning on the distorted guitar leads.

The next song Aleph-null starts with this really cool dark intro, which then turns into a typical Daniel Bennett solo. Unfortunately the song loses momentum here, as we see a glimpse of what makes other guitar records so uninteresting. Luckily Daniel doesn''t fall into the trap of overlong solos, and after about a minute of soloing the song seems to find its way as it returns to a cool guitar riff. The song finishes with my favorite moment on the album, at about 3:20, when this really cool feedbacking guitar sound comes over the top. Awesome!!!!

This song segues into Chirp, one of my favorites off the album. Not much to say but cool guitar effects, and a really cool mood.

Following Chirp is Concupisco..., which is another awesome song, and my personal favorite. Cool effects intro, builds into a really cool dark guitar part played on the resonator guitar, which is later built on by the 12-string acoustic. The whole song is just well constructed, with each part developed well, but not over played.

The song is followed by ...Sophismata, which is unusual, but in a good way, with good use of the violin bow on the guitars. The song is just well written, with some cool acoustic guitar playing.

Next is Embolium, Another interesting track, but cool. This track is basically an exposition on playing clean electric guitar with echo. Well done.

The next track, Winter, begins with this cool lead played on the electric, using the ebow. Sounds really cool and mournful. Unfortunately, I find the part at 2:10 to be slightly misplaced in the song. It''s a cool riff, but it''s slightly out from the start of the song. There''s still some cool playing on the song, but I feel that it loses the cool atmosphere that the song had built up.

Quisquiliae, feels like it could be straight from David Gilmour''s "On An Island", and I personally think it is the weakest song on the album. It''s still a cool song, but just not to the quality of the others.

The album is rounded off with Ueratius. Another really good song. This one starts with some cool reversed guitar playing, and goes to some cool effects on guitar. I really like how the song finishes with a riff from the first song, which makes the album feel like its has gone in a circle.

Overall, the album has really good production and effects quality. Its surprising to think that Daniel achieved all of this with only a Zoom 505 and GuitarFX Box for computer. The song writing is tight, and apart from a few sections, incredibly well done. The songs have cool melodies and moods running through them, and don''t just degenerate into mindless guitar soloing. The musicianship is tight, with all the parts played well. Daniel Bennett is no Yngwie Malmsteen, so don''t expect any lightning fast guitar playing, but the guitar playing is still very good. Daniel''s guitar playing is heavily influenced by Kirk Hammett from Metallica, and it shows in a few places, but is done with a style that Kirk never achieved.

So, overall, a strong instrumental album, that even if you don''t play guitar you will still enjoy. I believe that Daniel has realised that the key to good instrumental work is melody, not technical ability, and it shows on this album. I would recommend this album over Steve Vai''s "Passion and Warfare" or Yngwie Malmsteen''s "Rising Force" any day.

9/10
