Listening to Green on the Vyne is like being reacquainted with an old friend. But how can that be, when the oldest member of the group is just the tender young age of sixteen? This group of old souls is breathing a breath of fresh air into the long-existing world of acoustic and bluegrass music, while staying true to their roots. Green on the Vyne is made up of five, incredibly talented musicians. Let’s start with Ty Jackson on guitar, Emily Dean on the upright bass, and Sydni Perry on the fiddle. These three sing lead (separately) and harmony (beautifully). Then there’s Casey Campbell on the mandolin and Luke Munday on the banjo, both also sing lead with the band. The band’s soulful, well-blended harmonies are proof of their incredible musicianship and talent.
When you hear a little about the band member’s backgrounds you can understand how a group of young kids still green, so to speak, have grasped such an original yet traditional sound. It’s no wonder that they are becoming one of the brightest lights in the music scene today. It’s in their blood.
Sydni, sixteen years of age, can be heard on Patty Loveless’ Grammy nominated CD “Sleepless Nights”. She began playing fiddle at age nine and has been playing in a family band with her parents since she was ten years old. Sydni has recorded a project with her family as well as doing her fair share of songwriting and recording her own demos. You may have been lucky enough to catch her playing at one of the songwriter nights around Nashville, TN. Sydni spent much of her time at The Main Stage, music and dance school, learning fiddle tunes and songs for their family band, which lead her to meet Ty and Emily.
Ty, fourteen, has been studying with the Boys Choir at the Blair School of Music since he was eight years old. He was able to do a prestigious tour of Germany with the Boys Choir in 2007 and will be doing a small tour with them in England in 2009. Ty, auditioned, along with many other young vocalists, and was chosen to be the boy Soprano soloist in a performance with the Nashville Symphony in 2008. He has studied guitar and clogging and is the 2005 National Clogging Champion.
Emily, fourteen, wrote two of the songs on the first Green on the Vyne CD. She is such an amazing writer that several well known songwriters in town are hoping to write with her. Oh, and I said she plays bass? Let me clarify - she taught herself to play, and play well, when the band realized that they were missing a bass player. Emily has studied mandolin, guitar, voice and clogging. She is the 2006 National Clogging and Buck Dancing Champion and the 2007 National Buck Dancing Champion.
Sydni, Ty and Emily got together and competed in a trio singing competition, against more than forty other acts, including adults, in the summer of 2007. To their surprise they won. Once these three sang together, the idea of Green on the Vyne was born. All they needed were Casey and Luke.
Casey, sixteen, is the son of the late, great fiddler Jimmy Campbell. The music world is Casey’s world and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Not only does he play guitar, dobro and fiddle; he is writing some of the instrumentals for the band.
Luke, sixteen, started playing the banjo after seeing the movie “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”. At his young age he has already had the honor of playing on the Grand Ole Opry. He also plays guitar and lists Frank Sinatra and Robert Johnson as his influences.
Green on the Vyne’s first recording experience produced “Ready For the Pickin’” which includes three original songs. They recorded the very old and traditional “Wind and Rain” live, in a big room – standing around two microphones just like the old guys used to do it. It is truly amazing! This CD’s roots are planted deep in that good old traditional sound but its branches are reaching for the sun. It is this combination that gives Green on the Vyne a sense of timelessness and purity. They have a sound that goes far beyond the fickle whims of today’s fads or trends.
It’s not everyday you get a chance to hear something as spiritual and passionate as this diverse combination. Green on the Vyne is a group of eclectic, soulful, yet innocent kids who play and sing with a talent well beyond their years. Together they bring a level of dedication and musicianship that has the power to transcend all barriers placed on genre or age.
