Details:
Danny Bedrosian and Secret Army strike again with their third album, the dance-floor stomper/social treatise entitled MUZZLE MOOSICK.
Most of the usual suspects abound on this mixture of foot stompin fonk, sophisticated jazz, soulful R&B, raw psychedelia, mysterious middle eastern sounds, and serene classically-tinged moments.
All of the Secret Army''s live stage band appear on the album; Danny Bedrosian, Dewayne "Blackbyrd" Mcknight, Lige Curry, Rico Lewis, Marc Munoz, Mike Maloney, Teresa Jimenez and Elise "moonchild" Bedrosian. Many of these members also hail from such bands as far afield as Parliament-Funkadelic, The Headhunters, The Soular System, Naked Funk, Sweet Motha'' Child, and many, many more.
Also featured on this album is beatsmith Jon Picken, much of the Russian Funk family including C.L.O.N.E, World Violinist Felix Lahuti, P-Funk''s Garry "Starchild" Shider, members of Dr. Sloptapus, and more.
the artwork for this new Secret Army album is, as usual, done by the masterful hand of Mr. Nathan Boucher, who is as consistent and innovative in his approach and his product as the musicians themselves. With the cow frothing at the mouth concept, Boucher has once again, been most successful in coming closest to Bedrosian''s conceptual vision.
This album is also special in that it has almost equal number of amazing instrumentals to intricately arranged vocal dominated songs. There is something for everybody in both of the aforementioned categories.
Indeed, some of Bedrosian''s finest production shines through on this album, which starts with the bebop/swing of Cherry Pie, as the first half hour of the album propels the listener into a body and mind throbbing, sweating, pulsing, frenzy. This is by far a more dance oriented album than the past Secret Army endeavors, but continues to be dance oriented and still true to the FUNK, and eschewing always true musical mentalities through Jazz, Classical and world music, on the more progressive levels. The album goes immediately into a universal vibe, when Secret Army teams up with Russian Funk band C.L.O.N.E, P-Funk''s Garry Shider, and world music violinist Felix Lahuti on Detka. This song is Bedrosian''s mix of an EP of the same title available now as well. There are many mixes of the song, the available version on the album is the ''secret army mix'' done at BOZFONK Stoodioze in Florida. The album continues to dominate the dancefloor with Bedrosian, Curry, Mcknight, Lewis, Munoz, and Jon Picken crafting some amazing funk on the first five or six tracks. Dr. Sloptapus contributes to the bass-heavy Morning Freak as well.
Halfway through the album, the vibe shifts gears with Tanyel of Anzitene, Bedrosian''s instrumental ode to a time and place of old, as he weaves himself into the mythological epic which has fictional characters, but uses a completely non-fictional place; Anzitene, the Roman name for the home region inside Sophene where Bedrosian''s Armenian family descended from, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
The album continues to be danceable but more R&B sensibilities creep in, with added jazz layers, innovative production and included Armenian vocal and musical arrangements, songs like FDNA (with its amazing social commentary as well), Lightning, Invention, Royal, and Double Turpentine take the listener through worlds ONLY secret army has the ability to do. Bedrosian, Curry, Maloney, Jimenez, Moonchild, Jon Picken, Munoz, and the gang shine on these tracks.
The album finishes out with three leftover goodies; the ORIGINAL version of Mista Lil strangah (from sleaziest of the greaze disc 2), the original version of Dusty Basement (which appears on this album as well) and the original version of Cherry Pie.
the masterful mixing, engineering and mastering, not to mention the class-A performances and writing by all the contributors has created a very clean, bright, warm, colorful Secret Army album, this the third, and surely not the last. Bedrosian himself noted this is one of his personal favorites, and many early listeners have likened this album more to Bedrosian''s debut solo album Som''n Fierce than to other Secret Army albums although the core of the Sleaziest of the Greaze crew is again back for Muzzle Moosick.
