Details:
Brummbaer had no formal musical training, so he felt free to declare any sound to be music – it takes the effort of the listener to understand and enjoy the structure of noise, which then is perceived as music.
In 1972 he created a radio play -- Maschine Nr. 9 -- with his friends Wolf Wondratschek, Germany’s probably most successful poet of the time, and Georg “Chaitanya” Deuter, who innocently invented New Age music, before there was a New Age. Maschine Nr. 9, a wild medley of music, sounds, and words, became a classic and is still played on the radio. Deuter was also Brummbaer’s most valuable music teacher. He taught Brummbaer to play any instrument he felt like playing, so in the end he played all of them -- poorly – with exception of the Jews harp, where he was a master!
Brummbaer also collected sounds at the time and had a huge library of sounds, rare and valuable then -- today it takes only minutes to find more sounds, music, and recorded poetry on the internet than you could find in a year in the Sixties, crossing continents.
For years Brummbaer dabbled in music, sometimes playing with members of the legendary German group “Amon Duul”, and other, more obscure musicians.
Only with the advent of computers could he do what he really had in mind: The use of every existing instrument, tuned, modulated, and mutated to sound like nothing ever before. He also realized that almost any piece of music ever written is available on the internet in MIDI format, and he orchestrated many classical and not so classical compositions with new, freshly invented instruments – probably to the horror of fans of classical music, who assume that Bach would turn in his grave. Brummbaer, on the other hand, believes that these days Bach would have a computer and create even more masterpieces than he did then.
Brummbaer’s favorite musicians are people like Terry Riley (and most minimal music),
Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Paul,Haslinger, Sainkho Namtchylak (and all other Tuva-throat singers), and, of course, all the great rock’n rollers like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Burdon, Janis and Jim, etc…
