Derek Singleton, guitar player and composer, is the "brain" of The TriSonics who''s coming from Texas where plenty of youngsters learn to play the guitar in their adolescence! It is quite amazing the fact that he is professionally involved in several rock''n''roll bands for 20 years now! Living in Germany has managed to impeccably combine the American rock''n''roll tradition with neo-rockabilly sounds and build the exciting sound of The TriSonics. Accompanied by Barbara on double bass and Dim on drums, they altogether offer an astonishing live album from the Stadelheim prison in Munich. Highlights of the album are, Johnnh Cash''s "Folsom Prison", Blondie''s "Call Me", their smashing hit in Germany "Mystery Lady" and the brand new song "Solitude". When rock''n''roll is one''s "native tongue", will surely know how to play and sing in the best possible way, like Derek does.
Read some excerpts from an interview with the bass player, Barbara (read German version below):
Your prison concert is reminiscent of Johnny Cash. Were you deliberately walking in his foot steps?
BS: Participation is a very important component of any functioning society. We chose to play there, just as other people donate blood. By the way, the Bad Toelz Boys Choir performed in the same prison. I wonder if they were asked about the Johnny Cash connection.
What''s it like playing for people that definitely won''t be going home after the show?
BS: Well, you don''t wish them a safe trip home, that''s for sure, but that doesn''t have any effect on our wanting to put on the best show we can.
Ever wonder what crimes put these guys behind bars, or does that not matter?
BS: Sure we did. But on the other hand, Stadelheim inmates are waiting for their day in court, so they''re still presumed innocent.
Have you received letters from the inmates or from other bands? What were their reactions?
BS: We''ve seen a lot of responses, both from inmates and other bands. People ask us about it everywhere we go. DJ''s greet us with "Jailhouse Rock" and a lot of fans have expressed disappointment at having missed it.
Does Rock''n''Roll mean anything to today''s inmates? Aren''t they more into HipHop?
BS: The prison population is multiethnic in nature. More than 200 languages and dialects are spoken in Stadelheim, where inmates communicate mostly in English. I think they probably care more about good entertainment than what''s cool and what''s not and don''t forget, these aren''t all just hip young dudes. Many of them are elderly and not all prison entertainment events are musical. Authors of contemporary literature give lectures there.
Isn''t Rock''n''Roll particularly attractive for prisons because of it''s "rebellious" image?
BS: We''re not there to become their Rock''n''Roll buddies, and we''re not there to judge them either. But they''re obviously in a difficult and tense situation and we''re there to give them a chance to find at least a little
release. We played our song "Solitude" for them, which is a song of ours that deals a lot with loneliness, something they can certainly relate to, and it showed in their reactions. What more can a musician ask for?

Euer Gefängnis-Auftritt erinnert an Johnny Cash und seine Auftritte vor Gefangenen - wolltet Ihr in seine Fussstapfen treten?
Partizipation ist ein wichtiger Grundsatz einer funktionierenden Gesellschaft. Die einen gehen Blutspenden – wir spielen im Gefängnis. Übrigens tritt der Tölzer Knabenchor dort auch auf; da denkt dann keiner an Johnny Cash.
Was ist es für ein Gefühl, vor Leuten zu spielen, die hinterher nicht raus können?
Eine gute Heimfahrt wünscht man denen nicht; aber die Motivation, für gute Unterhaltung zu sorgen, ist auf einer Gefängnisbühne genauso groß wie auf einer anderen.
Denkt man darüber nach, welche Straftaten die Knastis verübt haben oder ist das kein Thema?
Natürlich denkt man darüber nach. In unserem Fall waren es auch noch Nicht-Verurteilte, Untersuchungshäftlinge.
Habt Ihr Briefe von den Gefangenen bekommen? Oder von anderen Bands - wie sind die Reaktionen?
Wir haben viele Reaktionen bekommen, sowohl von Insassen als auch von anderen Musikern. Immer noch werden wir viel darauf angesprochen, egal, wo wir hinkommen. DJs legen "Jailhouse Rock" für uns auf, und mancher Fan ist traurig, dieses Konzert verpasst zu haben!
Ist Rock''n''Roll für den heute "typischen" Knasti (gibt es den überhaupt) von Bedeutung? Oder ist da HipHop/Aggro Berlin identifikationsstiftender?
Die heutigen Häftlinge sind multi-ethnisch – in Stadelheim etwa spricht man in 200 Sprachen und Dialekten. Hauptkommunikationssprache untereinander ist sicher Englisch. Der Hipness-Faktor der Musik ist vielleicht nicht so bedeutend wie der Unterhaltungswert; außerdem gibt es auch Häftlinge im Seniorenalter, die lieber Doris Dörries Lesung zuhören als einer Band.
Passt Rock''n''Roll wegen des Rebel-Images besser ins Gefängnis als andere Musikstile? Könntest du dir andere Konzerte vorstellen? Ist das so ein archaisches Rock-Thema - der Outlaw und der Rock''n''Roller?
Wir suchen keine Verbrüderung mit den Eingesperrten, schaffen aber gerne mit unserer Musik ein Ventil für Emotionen. Als wir unseren Song „Solitude“ spielten, in dem es um Einsamkeit geht, konnten wir starke Reaktionen bei den Häftlingen hören und sehen. Wir bemerkten, dass sie sich verstanden fühlten. Kann es eine bessere Bestätigung für eine Band geben?
