Close your eyes. Think back to 17. What images come to mind? Sex, drugs and rock n’ roll? Perhaps some seriously (but purposefully) disheveled grunge hair from the early 90s or even more serious (and purposeful) metal hair from the 80s?
Wherever you were at 17, Nuclear Symphony’s songwriter Seth Rhyne is likely in a different place altogether. “I want to make music that’s historical, that promotes a social agenda,” even if, he admits, there’s more to learn. While most teenagers are on a sex-overload these days, carefree about their future and even more nonchalant about the past, Nuclear Symphony wants to connect young listeners to our collective history by way of catchy, socially conscious pop songs.
The four-man group of friends is a collection of talented instrumentalists who all hail from a small Southern town just east of Oak Ridge, Tenn., home of a national nuclear facility. There, they have been able to create a pop sound that honors the punk rock stylings of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dookie-era Green Day, and at times the echoed effects of indie rockers My Morning Jacket, while also creating a band whose name and purpose are linked closely to their roots.
Band members are Nik Hatmaker (vocals, guitar), Seth Rhyne (guitar), Keith Hackett (bass), and Nick Vesser (drums, background vocals). All are/were members of the Powell High School Marching Band and hope to promote the funding of music education through their lyrics and profits made from this project.
