Singer, Songwriter Releases Second Indie Title, “Soul Medicine”

A true and diverse recording artist, Malloy has been on a musical journey of maturation, re-invention and re-discovery. With the independent release of his second solo album, entitled “Soul Medicine” (a MalloyMusic & Innocent Bystander joint), this introspective project is collaboration between Malloy, the visionary singer-songwriter, and his incredibly talented producer-keyboard player Rodney Lee.

The intent for Malloy was to initially write to perhaps four tracks provided by Lee, “but I knew after hearing more music, that I wanted him to do the entire album with me,” says Malloy. “Rodney is an amazing keyboard player. He was able to capture my flow and understand my artistry and I think were able to create music that is purely Medicine for your Soul.”

There is no official first single for “Soul Medicine,” but the songs, “Days of Babylon” and perhaps the urban user-friendly “I’m Ready” are the focus or central songs being serviced to press, internet audiences, and industry tastemakers. Both songs are getting a great deal of positive reaction; especially from Malloy’s cult following of fans that have been anticipating new music from him for a while.

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, yet making Los Angeles home for most of his life, Malloy may be recognizable to wider audiences as a member of the now-defunct Urban Pop-Rock group Dakota Moon.

Malloy cut his teeth as a singer, while hanging out with fellow singers, dancers and actors during college. “They sparked, nurtured and tapped into my creative side,” he says, allowing for him early on to join a vocal group. “It was during that time that I became committed to the process,” says Malloy. “I learned about structuring harmonies, production and recording, and it prepared me for greater heights.”

Malloy’s immediate goal was to get songwriting and vocal session work whenever he could—possibly pursue a solo career, but opportunity came forth when a team of executive-producers were looking to form a unique Pop-Rock group sort of in the vein of the Eagles, but with Black guys; hence Dakota Moon.

According to Malloy, ‘this was an opportunity of a lifetime.‘ Signed in the late 90s to Elektra Records, the four-man group was comprised of Ty Taylor (vocals), Ray Artist (bass), Joe Dean (guitar), and Malloy who shared in the lead vocals and played some percussion. Dakota Moon’s self-titled debut album contained two Billboard Top 10 Adult Contemporary singles, “Another Day Goes By,” and “A Promise I Make.” Such benchmarks allowed the guys to join superstar Tina Turner on the final leg of her “Wildest Dreams” tour where they played such international destinations as Japan, Philippines, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and South Africa.

The group gathered added exposure from an appearance on both the Rosie O’Donnell Show & VIBE television show, singing in a Pepsi commercial and being a part of the soft drink’s promo mall tour. Dakota Moon recorded a follow-up album, “Looking for a Place to Land,” but unforeseeable circumstances and poor promotion led to the demise of the album, and eventually the group.

Malloy saw this as opportunity to re-launch his solo career, and dispatched fellow Dakota Moon member Joe Dean to produce his first solo album, “Take to the Sky,” an R&B, guitar-based collection of 13 songs. Running off the momentum he generated from Dakota Moon, Malloy released the album independently and literally sold it on the streets and at live performances.

For his latest project, “Soul Medicine,” “I wanted the project to be more soul-music and spirit-based,” says Malloy. “Take for instance ‘Love Supreme,’ which is a song inspired by my parents’ relationship, but through my Mother’s unique perspective. Then there is ‘Whales Away,’ a very artistic track with its lyrics that are about ‘surrender.’ I absolutely love that song.”

On the song “Connected (This Life),” Malloy was captured by the unifying messages signified in the recent Barack Obama campaign; while on the album’s closer, “Same Ol’ People,” he discusses the spiritual path and journey that he is trying to maintain…and how one cannot allow themselves to be distracted by very natural and human things.

All in all “Soul Medicine” is a cohesive collection of 10 songs that will appeal to an array of diverse audiences, adult radio formats, and music enthusiasts looking to discover new music and great talent.
