The songs on this CD are some of my favorite country songs that I wrote or co-wrote over the years. They were recorded in various bedroom and garage studios all over the Los Angeles area by some very gifted engineer/producers: Edward Tree, Tom Manche, Paul Nielsen, Jim Kimball and Mark Indictor.
About The Songs: Someone Else’s Dream is about a fictional pioneer woman named Nell and what might have happened to her and her family as they crossed the country in a covered wagon. The drum tracks on My Old Dancin’ Shoes consisted solely of drum brushes hitting on a reel-to-reel tape box. At the time Longin’ for Texas Blues was written, Texas was experiencing a recession, so Barbara Borax and I decided to write this song in support of our beloved Texans. Sandy Sherman and I were asked by a publisher to write a song reminiscent of the Eagles, and so Tears of the Heart was conceived. Paul Nielsen and I performed in a successful duo in Pasadena, CA, and Tom Tally, a wonderful violist and friend, would sit in with us on many magical nights. It was Tom who arranged and played the viola parts on our recording of Elephant in the Room. Cowboy Blue Eyes was inspired by the beautiful crystal blue eyes of Barbara’s Norwegian father, whom she adored. A Letter From A Battered Wife is a love letter from Barbara and me to the women who are enduring the hardship of domestic violence, delivered in the hope and with prayers that each and every one of them will find the courage to set themselves free.
SOME COOL STUFF:
Jo Anne has been singing and playing the guitar throughout the Los Angeles area for most of her life. Her first job that required her to obtain a social security number was a gig at Disneyland where she played in a folk group called The Fourmost. They played in a show called Hootenanny Nights, sharing the bill with a skinny young singer named Hoyt Axton.
Her diverse musical adventures ranges from playing in a bluegrass band in Montie Montana Jr.’s Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in Jakarta, Indonesia, to singing backup for Iron Butterfly in the “20 Years After: Woodstock Reunion Concert.” Jo Anne was chosen by BMI as one of the top country songwriters in 1995. The songs she coauthored with Randy Pugh and Ron Guffnet charted in the top ten of the Top 100 Country Hits across Europe. She won Nashville’s Music Row Magazine’s Discovery Award for her CD "Hometown Beauty Queen" (also posted on cdbaby), performed as the opening act for Billy Preston, Sawyer Brown, and Lee Greenwood, and has sung on many radio and television commercials. In 2007, Jo Anne kicked off her record-producing career with Al Timss’s jazz CD "Last Call."
One of her most recent bookings was at the beautiful Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach, California, where she performed a single act.
Jo Anne graduated cum laude from Long Beach State University with a BA in Theater Arts. In her senior year of college, she cofounded the Burbage Theater in Hermosa Beach, California, where she acted and musical-directed a number of plays and musicals. She was honored with a Drama-Logue Award for Most Outstanding Performance as the lead in the play Death of a Miner.
