BIO:
Michael Kollwitz has been playing The Chapman Stick® * since 1976 and was one of inventor Emmett Chapman’s first music students. He is considered one of the top Stick players in the world today.

He began playing the revolutionary, new stringed instrument shortly after attending a performance by Emmett Chapman at UC Riverside in Southern California. After years of practice and study, he began his own performance career in the early 80’s. Since that time, he has performed extensively throughout the Western US and has given hundreds of performances at all types of events.

He has been an opening act for The Beach Boys, offered full-time work at Disneyland and has a client list that includes many Fortune 500 companies and civic organizations. Over the years, he has also performed for musical luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson and Steve Morse.

He has been featured on numerous TV and radio stations in CA, NV and AZ including “All Things Considered” on PBS. He has also been featured in many newspapers, magazines and various print media. His music was selected for inclusion in the very first CD compilation of the world’s best Stick players and his photo can be found in the Chapman Stick instruction book, “Free Hands”.

In October 2006, Michael had two simultaneous releases; a full-length DVD entitled “Live In Concert” that was filmed before a live audience in Sacramento, CA on July 30, 2006. The other release is a digital-download album entitled “20 Greatest Hits” (Hey- you''re looking at it right now!) These are his eighth and ninth releases respectively.

His seventh CD release, “ Waterfallin’ ” (Apr. 2006) includes 15 tracks of instrumental music- performed solo on The Chapman Stick without overdubs or edits. “ Waterfallin’ ” is the first-ever CD to prominently feature the new higher-range Alto Stick®. His other releases are: “Steppin’ Out” (Jan. 2000), “Moments” (Mar. 2003), “Carnival” (Dec. 2003), “Memories” (May 2004), “Frosty The Stickman” (Dec. 2004) and “Here Comes Spring” (May 2005).

His music is best described as a relaxing blend of jazz and blues. The Stick has a very unique, pleasant tone that immediately relaxes the listener. The sweet, soothing tones of The Stick are said to simply melt away the stress of the day.

He resides in the Sacramento, CA area and travels extensively to perform a variety of music at dozens of festivals and fairs in the Western US each year.

* The Chapman Stick® is easily the most radical innovation in stringed instruments since the invention of the electric guitar. Conceived in the mid 70’s by inventor Emmett Chapman of Los Angeles, The Stick is played with both hands; simultaneously playing BOTH bass and melody parts independently- by tapping and holding strings to frets (rather than by pluck or strum) The Stick incorporates the essence of guitar, bass, keyboards and drums- all into one instrument! With these unique capabilities, The Stick can sound like 2 or 3 musicians at once in the hands of a talented player.
