Upon retirement, most people would opt to settle in to enjoy the cozy, sedentary ways of their golden years.

Not Lucious Newsom.

At the age of 70, this retired minister of 30 years came to the Indianapolis area to observe the Thanksgiving Day custom of serving thousands of the cities’ needy a holiday meal. He thought this was one of the most amazing events he had ever witnessed in his life...until the next day, when he asked the question, “What do these people eat the rest of the 364 days of the year?”

He returned to his home in Tennesee, haunted by what he had experienced. After several weeks of stewing about the problem, his wife, Loreena told him, “Look Lucious, I’ve never stood in between you and the Lord before and I’m not going to start now. If you think God wants you to help those people up north, you’d better get going.”

That was all he needed. Lucious donned a pair of bib overalls and headed to Indianapolis with $100 in his pocket. He knew no one. He became a beggar for the poor. He went to various grocery stores, begging food and then distributing to those in the poorest neighborhoods he could find.

That was 20 years ago. Today, at the age of 91, this retired Baptist minister-turned-Catholic still awakens at 5 a.m. and works every day to improve the lives of others.

Often times, he pays for overdue utilities. Sometimes he begs for funds to pay for a funeral when family members can not afford it. He always instructs his many volunteers to look lovingly into the eyes of those they serve as if they were looking into the eyes of Jesus Himself.

Various churches invite him to speak about his ministry, The Lord’s Pantry. During his pulpit address, he blesses the people of the congregations with a capella renditions of his favorite old gospel hymns.

This collection of ‘gospel pearls’ is Lucious’ personal thank-you to the many who give of themselves to help ‘his people.’ It is also a reminder of the child-like trust in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit required of believers as they continue on their own journeys of faith, hope and charity.
