About Puttanesca, Greg Burk from the LA WEEKLY says...

"Then guitar Joe Baiza jabs his thistly intrusions against the silken draperies of singer Weba Garretson in a swingy, bluesy Puttanesca (great new CD!), abetted by bassist Ralph Gorodetsky and drummer Wayne Griffin and it’s a sophisticrude delight. Eastside meets West, and everybody wins.”

"Puttansecsa is one of the children of amazing vocalist Weba Garretson, with Joe Baiza on guitar, Wayne Griffin on drums and on bass Rafa (Ralph) Gorodetsky (ex-Universal Congress Of, played with Wayne and Joe in Mecolodiacs). Expect Ms. Garretson''s smooth and sexy voice parrying Joe''s angular guitar tones. If you''re hungry and you try to cook up a pasta with the few ingredients you find in your kitchen, you will end up with a dish that has the same name: surprising, delicious, and with plenty of bite that keeps you craving for more!" – Annemiek Dehaan

HISTORY
In September of 1993, a day before Weba Garretson was supposed to rehearse for the first time with Danny Frankel and Ralph Gorodetsky, Steve Stewart (her songwriting partner) said he needed to take an indefinite break. Devastated, Weba proclaimed that her music career was over. Her husband, engineer Mark Wheaton, insisted that she do the rehearsal anyway.
When she walked into studio and explained that she had no guitar player Frankel and Gorodetsky didn’t give up but instead created a power trio version of Stewart’s music. It wasn’t long before Garretson was sitting in with Frankel and Gorodetsky’s other band, The Mecolodiacs, led by guitar player Joe Baiza. “Welcome to Weba World” was recorded with Baiza, Gorodetsky, Richie West, Diane Barkauskus and Scott Looney in 1995 on Catasonic.
Ralph and Weba soon began writing tunes to juxtapose Baiza’s angular guitar with Garretson’s smooth sound. In 1996, they recorded with Wayne Griffin replacing Richie West on drums. Then things began to unravel. Ralph and Weba wanted to craft a Pop record with overdubs but Joe wanted to maintain the sparseness and spontaneity of the tracks. When the Mecolodiacs went to Germany to record, a street gang broke Joe’s hand with a baseball bat. Weba became occupied with the Eastside Sinfonietta and singing Kurt Weill classics.
Puttanesca went onto the shelf where it remained until Mark started mixing the songs in his spare time. Maybe the music needed 10 years to realize it’s flavor. The harmonies in these songs are at times angular and dissonant but always in a bold way. Perhaps that’s why the band is called Puttanesca because the music is assertive in it’s taste and earthiness.

BUON APPETITO!
