XENOVIBES [FOREIGN+EXPRESSIONS]
is the brainchild of Australian born Singapore artist, Shueh-li Ong, who coined the word as a way to explain her work as an instrument builder, composer, performer and producer. Shueh-li’s musical designs bind the past with the present, and her eastern roots with her western influences.
(Her 1st name is pronounced Cher+Lee.)

CHICK SINGER OR MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST?
Not to be mistaken for just a chick singer, this multi-instrumentalist boldly fuses the sounds of the Chinese GuQin, the Russian theremin, extended synthesizer techniques, the tin-whistle and countless other magical sounds to evoke her signature siren songs.

“Shueh-li’s Xenovibes” the 1st in this series was produced in Singapore and while you listen and wonder what her signature ‘style’ is, Shueh-li would like to remind you that she loves all ‘musics’ and as a composer is open to all persuasions. Hence you are listening to a sampling array of her ‘sound’; her performance, synth programming and sound design and how she puts them together in production.

An answer to an often-asked question:
''Musically, the CD is a production of my sound design and performance/production techniques whilst the concerts are what the ensemble brings to the performance table with their interpretation(s). That is the Xenovibes difference! The musicians don''t recreate what is on CD. Though guest artists appear on each CD.''
Which is why you must both buy the CD AND try watch them perform!

SINGAPORE’S 1ST AND ONLY DIVA OF THE THEREMIN (Straits Times Singapore)
Based in Singapore, Shueh-li has been known for her work as director, composer and technologist with performance art group, Electric Muse, which under her Director-ship has become a name associated with progressive music technology in entertainment.

But more importantly Shueh-li is known as an exponent of the theremin, an instrument played by shaping precision hand movements in front of two antennas without touching it. Shueh-li chose to learn how to PLAY the theremin. Meaning that it is not used as a sound effect but rather performed like a musical instrument, which can take years of practice before one would dare play it in front of a live audience.

EXPERIMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF NEW MUSIC – EAST, WEST, ARCANE, NEW TECH.
Shueh-li was born in Melbourne, Australia and received a Bachelor in Music at the Elder Conservatory studying piano with Stefan Ammer (formerly Professor of Piano at the Freiburg Academy of Music, Germany) and Music Technology under Tristram Cary (founder of the electronic music studio at the Royal College of Music LDN). This was followed by post-graduate studies in Interactive Multimedia Performance under Dr Jeff Pressing at LaTrobe University, Melbourne.

Shueh-li’s trademark is in the way she puts her ‘sound’ together, using her instruments (east, west, arcane, classical and new technology) and her intimate knowledge of its building blocks.
“(She) crafts textures, moods and sonicscapes. (Shueh-li) sees herself as one of the myriad results of the experiments in the long-term history of new music.” The Straits Times, Singapore.

XENOVIBES THE CONCERT
Shueh-li is currently in America on a visa awarded only to “Artists of Extraordinary Ability” by the DHS and American Federation of Musicians touring with Xenovibes the Concert.
This show designer and Moog international artist, has teamed up with Yamaha e-drummer John Anthony Martinez who was invited to perform at its premier, as the performing core of Xenovibes USA.

"The idea is to bring accomplished musicians of differing backgrounds and put them in a place of self -expression. Musicians from each place of call will complement the core line-up; so the feel is constantly evolving. This is the very essence of Xenovibes; disparate sounds coming together to create a hi-octane musical exchange!”~ Shueh-li.

XENOVIBES - SINGAPORE PREMIER AND AMERICAN DEBUT
Xenovibes made its premier in 2004 at the refurbished Old Parliament House in Singapore to a standing-room only crowd.
“Xenovibes was a huge success, drawing a packed crowd, with those who stood throughout the event being a testimony to the degree in which Shueh-li had captivated and created an audience for her brand of music.” ~ GM, Old Parliament House, Singapore

Xenovibes USA debuted at the Dallas Museum of Art in front of 4,380 people, followed by performances at the Eisemann Center and Palace Theatre as part of its ''Fall05 Dallas Tour.

Artists who have played Xenovibes include Bill Ham [Cher, Joan Armatrading], Chuck Smith [Najee, Kirk Whalum], Mike McKinney [Jackson 5, Sergio Mendes], Shelly Carrol [Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Duke Ellington Orch], George Anderson [Vanilla Ice, FW Symphony], Jennifer Perryman, Boo Massey.

XV I - XV II ALBUMS
Whilst XV I was the starting point for Shueh-li to document some of her work sensibilities (guest artist, Electric Muse partner Michael Spicer), “Music From Another Land - XV II” continues with a celebration of the diverse musical cultures that have given us so many wonderful styles in the form of song, dance and film music. XV II has just been released Sept/Oct 2006.

Shueh-li is currently based in Dallas and hopes to have a touring itinerary that will cover your ''neck of the woods'', so let us know if you want to see Shueh-li perform in your city and we’ll try and make it there!
