RECENT AWARDS on https://www.tradebit.com for track 1 ''Baby Lie''
Week of April 17, 2006
Five awards, one overall, four genre, including BEST FEMALE POP ROCK VOCAL, BEST PROGRAMMING, BEST ''CHILL OUT'' TRACK

SUBLIME, SOFT AND SUBTLE MAGIC
"I like this track immediately. I love the sound mix at the start with the swooping sequenced synth sound - and the bass is terrific. I''m in mind of some of Peter Gabriel''s work but not exclusively - this is a subtle mix of different influences. There is a hint of John Martyn around the Grace and Danger period.

This song is sophisticated in its approach and I adore the female vocalist. The piano work is very subtle and pitched to perfection. The funky guitar punctuates and gells the song together. The drums are recorded well - love the snare.

Don''t say you don''t want me is a good hook and the backing vocals are sublime.

I like this. I''ll have two please! One''s for a friend."
- Paul Grogan, Dronfield, Derbyshire, United Kingdom

"The CD features tremendous musical variety and Julia shows a marvelous ability to create compelling musical hooks" - Morry Feldman, Executive, ClearChannel Communications, New York

"Julia''s voice is amazing!  Smooth as silk!  Great harmonies.  Cool electronic sound on track 1" - Deb Katz, musician, San Francisco

"This ... is a stunner, a musical lament of the most artistic sort... in every which way you can name" - Stanley Fisher, Portland Songwriter''s Association

"Julia Korena couldn''t be farther from your skin-tight-jeans-wearing rocker. But she grabbed onto the handrails of the indie train and is along for the ride. She plays original music at local venues and gets applause for HER music. In April, listners on https://www.tradebit.com voted her best pop rock female vocalist." - The Oregonian

Julia''s Bio
Singer, songwriter and pianist Julia Korena embodies one of those truly rare and refreshing blends of composer and performer. Musically educated and with many dues-paying years of stage experience behind her in cover, dance, and solo acts, Julia Korena emerges as a stand out Northwest talent, demonstrating an obvious depth of craft and poised to forge new paths as a solo performer and songwriter. Her sound rings somewhere between the soul of Shawn Colvin, the honesty of Suzanne Vega, the depth of Joni Mitchell, the cool of Peter Gabriel and the pop renderings of piano-driven 70s giant Carole King. Julia herself likes to describe her work as ''urban eclectic folk pop'' and one may hear any number of influences -- jazz, rock, pop, folk, blues, country, in Julia''s body of work. Soaring lyrical melodies capture the listener while intelligent chord structures drive the music forward. The lyrics are introspective and honest.

Julia''s Background
Her command, confidence and boundless versatility on stage come by her via an early career performing covers of numerous styles. Her first long-standing gig was with Virgil Lee''s Country Band in the mid 80s, an entertaining and energetic group that provided house country at the well known Spinning Wheel nightclub in Canby. She went on to tour with Girls Night Out, an all female ensemble that rolled their gear-filled van through cities and towns as far east as New Ulm, Minnesota and as far north as Petersburg, Alaska. After a few years playing solo covers at smaller venues, Julia took a position in The Night Owls, a dance band that played a handful of area nightclubs but mostly donned tuxes and gowns to play corporate events and private functions. There were some forays for Julia after The Night Owls, such as a year stint with the highly charged, up tempo Jumpstart Blues Band, but after these numerous experiences Julia felt certain that she had written some good songs, songs that could compete with what she''d been transcribing and playing all these years. The next logical step was to pursue a solo singer/songwriter career. Julia hopes the Northwest is glad she made this decision! Whether performing by herself with her Yamaha stage piano, or fronting a full band, Julia is sure to impress. There is a certain grit in Julia''s stage persona -- a polished grit.

After listening to even one song by Julia, her depth becomes obvious. Her training includes classical piano, voice, music theory, composition and jazz. One could safely say her musical ducks are in a row. But where Julia shines the brightest is at the level of the soul. She bares it when she performs and the genre is not always obvious. One hears splashes of jazz, blues, rock, soul, R&B, pop, all with a signature Korena twist. Besides offering quality original material, Julia successfully transforms covers into something she can call her own. You''ll hear her unique spin on the soulful, bluesy rendering of the 60s ballad Ode To Billy Joe or her obvious jazz and classical training on the Lennon/Mcartney classic You''ve Got to Hide Your Love Away performed in 5/8 instead of 6/8. These two songs appear on her current CD.

"I like my stuff to sound simple but not be simple," says Julia, then adds, "Listen to the CD more than once - with headphones! It has shelf life!"
