Music has always been the way in which I express my deepest thoughts, concerns and moments of wonder, especially when I have felt unable to speak. I write by finding the sounds first that move me in chords and single notes on guitar and piano and then the lyrics come. Singing for me is like breathing or drinking a glass of cool water on a warm day; it is central to my very existence.
Creating a song and working with other musicians to bring it to life and then performing it live is when I feel most at home in my life and existence. I found this later in life at age 30, something I should probably never admitt. But, it is a part of my story as a musician and one that I hope inspires others to pursue their dreams, no matter how silly or improbable they may seem. I didn''t start singing until I was 30 and taught myself to play guitar at 30. The piano was where I went as a child from age four until age eleven to express what I felt about my home life, my dreams, my fears and frustrations. I took piano lessons for 1 1/2 years and then we moved. I didn''t play the piano for almost 17 years, until I moved to Santa Fe, NM where I went to a little church to play during my lunch hour. It was as if a part of me had been sleeping all of that time and was finally awakened. I had no idea that I would later write these songs and record them and then play them live.
I have spent the last five years working for Habitat for Humanity International as an international fundraiser, raising 4.5 million. I travelled to Sri Lanka, Guatemala and Mexico and it was an experience I will never forget. But, it left little time for my passion; music. So, on May 15th, 2006 my job went away as our territories were re-organized. I walked away, peaceful and expectent for the time that lie ahead for me to rest and begin focusing on my music full time. I have several new songs that I long to record and I know there are more things to write about inside. In early 2006, I visited Jordan and Jerusalem and what I saw and experienced there will be reflected in my next CD. For now, I am lining up many opportunities to play in Denver and Boulder and having found musicians who are excellent to play with, I am challenged and stretched in ways I''d never dreamed.
