MAPS FOR A NEW WORLD LINER NOTES
After squeezing out Love Songs in 1990, my 7th compact disc in a ten year period, I thought I was done with recording music for a good long time. I felt like a Catholic mother who, after dutifully bearing a load of children, had finally said "enough!" Had a musical vasectomy been available, I might have gone for it. I looked forward to living more simply, without the general craziness and financial stretch marks that accompany my life when I''m birthing a new CD.
But I had some unfinished business left, a creative closet filled with orphan songs recorded over the years that were still searching for a disc to call home. On top of that there were two new songs begging to be recorded. I tried to resist, and for a while I https://www.tradebit.com with Maps for the New World, I accept it: I''m a non-recovering hopeless musical co-dependent. When it comes to my melodic offspring, I just can''t say no.
This CD spans three decades of songwriting and recording. It opens with What If...? Recorded live in 2002 during a Sunday service at the Seaside Church of Religious Science in Encinitas, CA, it was written by James Durst, a beloved globetrotting troubadour with whom I''ve several times had the joy of sharing the stage. It''s a humorous, inspiring, and touching look at the healing and transformation that can happen when the world as we know it goes through a sudden and massive change.
I wrote the second song, September 11th, a month after the Twin Towers fell. It helped soothe my feelings and find a context to hold the event that encouraged healing.
The remaining songs were written and recorded in the late eighties and early nineties at various studio and concert locations from Encinitas to the Jersey shore, including the Pocono Mountains and Brooklyn. That''s Donna Cary singing lead vocals on I Am In Love and This Is The Day. I had the honor of touring and recording with her in 1993. What a pure heart and bright light she is, and what a gift to have her here as guest angel and vocalist.
My first recording venture ever was at a studio in Union Beach, New Jersey in 1987/88. Soul Mate was part of that project, as well as the last five songs on the disc. I''ve included my first born here because I thought it might tickle you to hear what I was doing so early in my career, before time, experience, and some singing lessons helped evolve my craft. You have my blessings to use your free will and finger to skip over any that don''t turn you on and enjoy the ones that do. Hurray for compact discs!
The Birthday Song was one of the first songs I ever wrote. I remember the night I sang it over and over on a sidewalk in Greenwich Village. While my guitar case did not catch many dollar bills that evening, I do recall being amazed at how many passing pedestrians stopped dead in their tracks while I was singing and exclaimed, "How did you know it was my birthday?" Having the song brought to fullness in the studio by a trumpet maestro and a honky-tonk piano player was quite a thrill for me. Like Charlie felt when he first took his Golden Ticket into the Chocolate Factory, I was totally enchanted. To this day I still feel that way when other musicians and singers add their talents to my songs. It sure makes it hard to say no to more kids when conceiving is so much fun!
Miracle Man is a tune that tells my story from high school to 1986, when I moved into Miracle Manor, A Course In Miracles residential study community in Piscataway, New Jersey. I lived with inspirational author Alan Cohen (my spiritual teacher at the time), seventeen other adults, and six children. We rented a building that was once a convent and immersed ourselves (quite unconventionally) into an adventure of living, learning, and integrating as best we could the principles of A Course In Miracles. It was at Miracle Manor that I received the encouragement and support to begin performing and recording my music.
What to call this CD was a challenge. In placing a variety of songs from three decades onto one disc, I wanted a title that would tie them all together. Wondering what all these songs have in common, I was inspired to re-read a passage in Ken Carey''s channeled book The Third Millenium...Living In The Posthistoric World. In speaking of the future, it says, "Songs will be your maps in the new world. Their melodies overturn, undermine, and dissolve the structures of historical illusion. Biology is not a somber dance. The universe is deployed in song!"
I am so grateful to be a troubadour and mapmaker in these exciting, tumultuous and transformational times. Everywhere I am deployed in my travels I see people waking up from the illusion of helplessness, finding their authentic power, saying yes to their dreams, and learning to live joyous lives. As the old world deconstructs before our eyes, a new world is being created, right in the midst of the madness and mayhem. The media may not be reporting it, because peace, love, and healing do not (yet) sell newspapers, but you and I are part of a wondrous re-construction team. Let Maps For A New World help you whistle and sing while you work and awaken. Changing the world is an inside job. May this soundtrack get under your skin.
