I started making music as a DJ at the age of 15 in Brooklyn, New York. I Was influenced by the first rap record ever to be recorded. The record called Personality Jock was made by the Fat Back Band and the rapper was King Tim the III. When DJ Starsky rocked the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem in the Summer of 1979 It changed my life forever. That’s how I got the name Bon Rock.
Back In the days I had a radio show called Bon Rock Live on WHBI 105.9 https://www.tradebit.com lineup on WHBI was Mr. Magic & Marly Marl, The World Famous Supreme Team and The Roots Man Earl Chin. While doing the radio show I recorded "Searching Rap" which went to number one in Paris. The following year I recorded "Junior Wants to play" on Tommy Boy Records which went to number two. This eventually led to a production deal with Cant Stop Productions who had The Village People.
While Working with Henri Belolo & Jaques Morali in Paris the next Year I Wrote and recorded the record "Street Dance" which has sold millions of copies since its original release. Street Dance remains popular in Old Skool radio shows and Break Beat compilations.
My original backup rappers were known as "The Rhythm Rebellion" they were Colleen Saunders & Michelle Butler. Following Them was Dianne Hawkins, Tania Baptiste from the group "Cotton Candy" and My DJ Doug Kinard. In early 1993 I was producing a group called “R” Time that was managed by the Wu Tang Clan.
In 2004 I began making records on my own independent Label. I am Currently working with Von Thaden of Bad One Inc. and Junior Wilson who worked on Tony Braxton, Tyrese and did the remix of ordinary People by John Legend.
We will soon see what the future holds for the new sounds of hip hop soul.
