It''s hard to look at Todd Lipscomb, singer and principal songwriter for The Kentucky Struts without imagining Woody Guthrie and Abe Lincoln sitting for one of those photo booth baby-morph pictures. He''s lanky and weed-thin with a scruffiness that betrays his intellect and that balance is reflected perfectly in his music and lyrics. While it''s easy to spot influences like Guthrie, Dylan and Nebraska-era Springsteen, it''s always been about what individuals did with those influences that separated them from the crowd. As Cincinnati CityBeat editor Mike Breen wrote, " Todd Lipscomb doesn''t just write songs; he inhabits them."
The tracks on the new disc run the gamut from delicate lullabies to amped-up barn burners, but regardless of the backbeat, each is infused with an earnest sense of self that Lipscomb reveals through carefully placed words that weave their way through vulnerable subject matter. Walking the line between clever and smug is never easy, but Lipscomb does it effortlessly.
After cutting his teeth for a few years in coffee shops and small clubs in and around Cincinnati, Lipscomb decided to enlist the help of some fellow Kentuckians to round out his sound. The addition of utility man Adam Pleiman (guitars, pedal steel, keys, backing vocals), Brian Teismann (guitar, backing vocals), Brian Kelly (drums) and Brian Mahan (bass) (goddamn, that''s a lot of brians) provided a much-needed kick in the ass for Todd''s acoustic guitar and lonesome harmonica. The flushed-out instrumentation adds a tremendous amount of depth to even the sparsest arrangements, buoying Lipscomb''s wavering voice like a life preserver tossed to a flailing swimmer. From the tender "Lucid" to the adrenaline-fueled "Sure Shot", the album is loaded with stellar moments, all evidence enough that the overly-saturated alt-country and Americana genres have a shining new hope in the Kentucky Struts.
