Details:
Nuestra Sangre Flamenca is an album of traditional flamenco. It is ideal for flamenco students and aficionados alike because it includes the cante, guitar, and dance.

Lucia Rodriguez-Sanchez and Valdemar Phoenix have been performing together with their group Gitanerías Flamenco since 1983. Lucia y Valdemar have performed at major international festivals, at college campuses, schools, and arts events throughout Texas, where they are based. Their work has also taken them to Alabama, Louisiana, Kansas, New York, Missouri, the New England States, Washington, Canada and elsewhere. They are on the touring roster of the Mid America Arts Alliance.

They are certainly not the new kids on the block. Their flamenco experience spans decades. Their work, firmly based in the essence of traditional flamenco, reflects a contemporary approach to the art.

They are the producers of Gráfico, a made-for-TV video production, released in 2000., and their second CD, Ritmo Azul, was released in 2005. Ritmo Azul is also available at https://www.tradebit.com

Nuestra Sangre Flamenca was released in 1998. It is the result of their years of experience, and is very traditional, with Lucia''s cante and Valdemar'' s guitar supported by the percussion of Lisa de la Garza. All tracks are based on the essence of flamenco rhythms, or ''palos'' yet each arrangement is original. Todita mi alegria is an Alegria. It combines Lucia''s flamenco cante with her dance, and the footwork or ''zapateado'' is distinctive. Madre Dolores is dedicated to Lucia''s mother Dolores, and is a Fandango Grande. Most words of the song are Lucia''s original lyrics. A Juan Breva is dedicated to the 19th Century cantaor (singer) Juan Breva, a fruit vendor who sang his wares to the public as well as singing flamenco in the famous Cafe Cantante venues of the day. Las Paredes del Alamo, a Buleria, is dedicated to Lucia''s home town of San Antonio, and her original lyrics pay tribute to her first flamenco teachers. Val has two guitar solos on the album. First is Tios y Primos, (Uncles and Cousins) dedicated to all of his flamenco mentors from whom he learned his art. Las Minas de Moria is a Rondeña, and fans of the Lord of the Rings by Tolkien will doubtless remember Moria, the gigantic cave city of the Dwarves. When Val was recording this piece, the engineers asked if they could try a new microphone arrangement as an experiment. The result was an amazing resonance and acoustic quality that reminded Val of the Mines of Moria. This is what a guitar would sound like in those mythical mines. Cien Enamoradas. 100 Lovers. Based on a legend of La Petenera, a mythical flamenco personage, reputed to have put 100 lovers in their graves. This is a Saeta rhythm performed here as a dirge, again featuring the baile (dance) por Siguiriya of Lucia. Finally, Salud y Sinceridad combines Tientos with Tangos. Lucia''s original letra includes a dedication to her mother-in-law, herself a one-time professional dancer, and Val''s mother.

You will find no fusions, nouveau, or pop rumbas in Nuestra Sangre Flamenca. Though the rhythms are completely traditional, the interpretation and arrangements are their own.

“Val and Lucia are the "real thing" in Flamenco music" says Matt Gilmour, Chair of the Department of Music at Missouri Western State College.

"Flamenco is alive and well on our southern border... Genuine music with lots of roots, and lots of heart."
Flamenco Connection
