Pressure Point A.K.A. P-Dot, A.K.A. P. Point, A.K.A. “Point”
This journey starts for me at the age of nine years old!! I started playing in the percussion section in my grade school band at West Ridge Elementary School in Racine, Wisconsin. I mainly played the drums. I think that’s when I first fell in love with music. In matter of fact I know it was. By the age of twelve years young I wrote my first rap song titled Living in Racine. At the time an Auntie of mine (my mother’s sister), Mrs. Bettie Ruffin-Jackson, started liking my music. A boyfriend of my aunties at the time had a band that he called Himself Managing Me. He taught me the very important things in the music business. He taught me the correct way to breathe while recording music. After that, the engagement fell through rather quickly.
I formed a childhood group with a friend of mine Allen Show (B-Love). We called ourselves “The Untouchables”. Back in those days my stage name was “Shorty Groove”, but people called me “Shorty G” for short. We made music together all throughout middle school at Starbuck Middle School in Racine, Wisconsin. As a member of the group “The Untouchables”, we did various talent shows in the hood. We did the Juneteenth Shows as well. Our school had a music program. We did a couple of concerts for our school through the music program but I felt like I had to have more. Shortly before I got to high school, Allen and I seemed to be having different views about rapping as a career. I wanted to make it a life long career. It seemed as Allen did not want to do it anymore. Around this time, I caught my very first criminal case. I was thirteen at the time. I got caught operating a vehicle without owners consent. At the age of fifteen, I perfected the art of free styling. I could never remember the rhymes I made. I also like the energy one got from spitting off the top of the head. I soon got a reputation for rapping and from there in my hometown even to this day that is what I am known for. One day in the main hallway at Case High School in Racine, Wisconsin as I was doing my thing like always, spitting fire (in an east coast style, Midwest flavor type of vibe) a challenge for a battle is presented to me by none other then Willie “Mr. Bogus” Flanigan. And of course I accepted it. The battle took place in the lunchroom but to both of our surprise, nobody won!! Lol!!
It went on and on and on…..and on. Finally we decided to make music together. By that time “Lethal Weapon” was born. We recorded out first single called Everlasting G’s at my guy Andrew’s brother’s studio. We were both only sixteen years old. After that it was on and poppin!!
My father started managing the both of us. He had us doing all kinds of shows from Milwaukee to Chicago. We did talent show, festivals, and we also performed at the Afrofest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Amphitheater. At the age of sixteen, we were both performing in front of five thousand to ten thousand people. Right before out senior year in high school, Mr. Bogus moved to San Diego, California with his family. I then decided to go solo. My favorite DJ was DJ Sham. He was the one who helped me and a lot of other brothers find the music world. On the Southside of Racine, up in that hot ass attic with two turntables and a microphone, DJ Sham and a boss beat was all I needed. It was hip hop at its finest!! It was around this time when I got into the streets real heavy (use your imagination). I was gang banging and into girls. Doing drugs and selling them had become my first love. So instead of me getting pinned for a robbery case and snitching on my guys at the time I move to San Diego, California with an old group member, Mr. Bogus. In the 1997, I had just turned eighteen and on my way to the sunshine state. Mr. Bogus and I had grown apart from each other. This was a surprise to me. We had different views about music, women, money, etc. This is when I found myself mostly by myself. Although I meet a few producers and won a few battles, I gained the most important experiences from that time period in my life from selling candy. I meet a lot of people when I was doing that. After getting kicked out of Mr. Bogus’ mom’s house for running the phone bill up to like three thousand five hundred dollars, I decided to move to Atlanta, Georgia with my cousin P.J. I was nineteen years old when I moved in with my cousin. Before I got to Atlanta, I had to run through Lisman, Birmauham and Honeyville, Alabama. This is where my family Rcots is at. Then I was off to New Orleans, Louisiana, then to Merriata, Georgia. This is where I got hot to death. Real talk!!
I was at the barber shop off of the South Cobb Drive when I met my first M.L. This was my man I called “E”. He had a scarface, slow hard flow type of style.
I had some dope ass tracks from east San Diego still so we decided to write a couple of songs together. With him being from Chicago, we both being gangsters (G.D.N.) we hit it off well together. This was a whole crew of cold ass niggas though!! It was “E”, “Dee” and I from Atlanta, Jackie Chann from New York, Kybeer from Bankhead, Meat from ?, Vland from Ohio, Righteous from California and the DJ was my dude, Jiggie Jay from Florida. We were all on some Wu Tang type of shit. Straight up!! We did all kind of showcases, park shows, etc. We even did a showcase for a C-low green production. It was a sad night for us that night because we didn’t make the cut. We were told that our freestyle was better then the actual song itself!! It was crazy!! Lol. We had an apartment with no furniture. We had nothing but crates, records, and Jay’s turntables. We use to have some Ill as saphiere’s and battles in that spot. It got to the point where people were paying just to come through and hear us spit!! After about a year or so went by, we all became broke as hell. My people started moving back home. This is when I started back hustling. I meet my baby momma and became a father. My son was born July 15, 2000. I felt like I had to stick around to stay in my son’s life. While I was living with my son’s mother, I purchased a Roland 303 Groove Box and a Makie Mixing Board. This is when Pressure Point and Top of Da World Entertainment were born. Since I was strictly by myself, you know solo, I needed a name and an image that fit my style and personality. P. Point was the name chosen. For about the next two to three years I was strictly doing local stuff!! I was making joints with anybody that would let me spit our way. I wanted to be known in my city. I have wanted to do this on my very own. The things I have wanted to do by myself are becoming a famous solo artist and a hustler. I did so by achieving those goals I had for myself.
Around this time in my life, I caught another case. It was a possession case. After I got out of the joint, I ran into Bill West Jr., who later became my manager for my music and stuff. I had recorded my first mix tape in Cleveland, Ohio with my cousin Tommy “Pooky” Fluner Jr. We did twelve songs together. The title was called 1000 Degreez. That was made it the year 2003. Bill loved it and started pushing my music and I straight to Chicago. People in the hood from Racine to the “Chi” were buying my shit!! This gave me a lot of confidence that I can do my own thing. It seemed like Bill and I had different views.
He wanted conservative, righteous hip hop and I wanted to do that gangsta shit point blank. By this point, I was a straight up dope boy, so I paid Talent 2k a total of $750.00 to promote and push my mix tape around the world where they advertised. At the same time, Bill got me involved in the “America I Can” project, which was founded by Jim Brown. The cats in Chicago had a performer’s agreement/management contract for me to sign. Talent 2k found an internet based record company called “Deftone Records” that was interested in signing me to a one song, single contract. It was for five thousand copies and a year’s time. But for me being a dope boy, I caught another case. This was a possession with intent to deliver cocaine charge. This time I went to prison. I happened to miss out on both contracts. I was sentenced and sent to Fox Lake Correctional Institution.
I got released in March of 2005. After getting released, I took everything I learned from DJ Sham, DJ Charlie, The Andrews Bros. and Bill West and finally got my own studio. T.O.P. Studio’s was all mines and nobody else’s. I dropped some mix tapes like you wouldn’t believe. Da Stinger, Welcome to Da T.O.P., Ghetto Gold, Da Best of Pressure Point and Hustle House are the names of some of the mix tapes I made. I started selling the mix tapes I made for only $5 each. I sold them out of my car, on the streets and liquor stores that would sell them. Since I learned about pressing, mastering, and mixing from Bill, I did the covers, cases, flyers, promoting and managing all by myself. I also record local artist’s in Racine and Milwaukee for as cheap at I possibly could, but if was all profit because everything in the studio was all mine!!
This is when I really found my swag and my delay, as Najia from Heard Magazine put it. My style is different from others. My voice tone sets makes people wonder if it’s really me doing each song. I have very good stage presence and my fans love me. All this comes with a true artist. This is when I became more then just a rapper. I became a musician. Sadly to say, I guess I still had the heart of a dope boy and caught yet another case for possession with intent to deliver t.h.c. I took a plea deal for this one and ended up with nine months in the county jail. I got out of jail in early 2007 still with fire in my body and soul. I got right back to work and started a mix tape series titled Convicted of 1st Degree Mix Tape Murder, which will be revised and dropped later this year (2009). Since my release in 2007, I have gotten my music very internet and ringtone friendly.
