As the founder and CEO of ShiWil Music Group, LLC, Damon J has almost invisibly become one of the most powerful forces in modern Gospel and Soul music. Combining traditional spiritual messages with modern arrangements and hip hop beats. Damon J''s groundbreaking work has helped bring an accessible style of Gospel music to general urban audiences. Born and raised in Elizabeth,New Jersey as Damon Jermaine Whitehurst,Damon J spent much of his childhood at concerts and in conferences singing and playing. In such churches as; his former church Lily of the Valley Baptist Church in Newark, NJ where he got his start in music by serving a a worship Leader for 7 years. In this period Damon J was developing as a fine keyboardist and a burgeoning songwriter,and was also learning first-hand the business of music. He attended EssexCountyCollege for a year,but the desire to write and perform was too strong,and he left,seeking a career in music. Over the next few years,Damon J became known in the local Gospel circuit as a prolific performer. However,his desire to writer,arrange,and produce his own music never went away,and in 2004 he began writing songs for what would ultimately become WORDS ABOUT HIM,which was released in March 2006 on his independent label ShiWil Music Group. Considering that Damon J''s work has been seen by many as a fairly revolutionary blending of Gospel and hip-hop,WORDS ABOUT HIM was just a taste of what was to come. The disc generally relied on familiar arrangements and keeps its focus on Damon J''s tenor voice and the strong background vocals. The disc included a number of upbeat Gospel numbers(such as such as“Because of Him”and“Higher”). There were also a number of sweet ballads,including"What Do I Do”and the lyrically strong"I’m Sorry."However,the best cuts were those that played to Damon J''s genre-bending strength,such as the hot"In You,"a wonderful mid-tempo number that deserves airplay on both Gospel and Urban stations,and"Free,"a funky Bass-carried cut that displays Damon J''s excellent Tenor voice. Now Damon J attends and is a faithful Worship Leader at Abundant Life Family Worship Church in New Brunswick, NJ where his father in the Gospel Bishop George C. Searight is his pastor, whom he has learned what it is to be a true worship leader. Damon J will undoubtedly continue to be a sought-after writer,producer and arranger for years to come.
