Details:
David Gergen is a solo artist from Los Angeles, CA. He discovered the guitar at age 16 while at a friend''s house and knew then that his life direction lied within those six strings. Playing along with old rock and blues records he honed his guitar chops while dreaming of ideas that would develop into a sound of his own. "Songwriting was part of the process from the start, it''s the vehicle for my soul, and the guitar is the fuel that drives it." He formed several alternative rock bands while living in Santa Cruz, CA., the place where he spent his formative years. The music of Pink Floyd, Cream and Bob Marley helped shape the sound during this period. In his early 20’s he moved back to Los Angeles, his birthplace, ground zero of the music business. "L.A almost made me not want a record deal... but it did reinforce the fact that I didn’t want the same sound everyone else was going for, this was always the driving force behind the home made record approach that I follow to this day. There are many things I would like to do sonically that I am not able to do with home recording, but the trade off of losing the creative environment and being on the clock is not worth the extra bells and whistles a major studio brings." "Falling Through a Glass World" was released in 1997, an experimental EP with drum machines, electric guitars and sonic noises. "I was trying to create a band sound without a band”. “The Blue Mind”, a set of 11 acoustic songs was released in 2002. "It is a bit gloomy I suppose....a strange period I hope not to repeat, unless of course I can get a great record out of it”. It contains the song “Old” which has received acclaim from songwriting contests in the U.S and Canada. Around this time artists such as Radiohead, Wilco and Jeff Buckley were influencing his sound. In 2006 “Haunting Whirlwinds” was released, an acoustic record, it contains 10 songs covering a landscape of moods while having an organic quality to it. The keyboards and Hammond organ add an ethereal backdrop while the electric guitar stops in for a visit every so often. “It satisfies me for now, but I haven’t even come close to the great album I envision in my mind, that album I have not made yet....but perhaps someday.
