Details:
The MSJ Project is a three-piece band that plays a mix of original music and classic rock tunes. Our original tunes range in style from rockabilly and blues to new wave and light jazz. Our guitarist/lead singer, Lee Gordon Jones, and our drummer, Al Schwartz, began playing together while in high school in 1973. Over the years they have played together in several Northern Virginia bands and have developed an intuitive sense for each others playing. Lee and Al and the bass player, Kelly Markin, all played together in a five-piece cover band for several years. The three of us began to get together to play the originals and more of the three-piece tunes we grew up on during the 60s and 70s. Before long, we collectively left the five-piece band and began gigging in our new three-piece configuration. Listeners who had heard both bands unanimously preferred the newer configuration. During our time together as a three-piece band, Al and Kelly have really locked on to each others style and now create a very strong groove for a rhythm section that fully supports the vocals and guitar solos. Our cover tunes include classics by The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Cream, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, Santana, and Van Morrison. However, whenever we play an original, the first question we get is "Which Dire Straits album is that from?" suggesting that our sound and style most closely resemble Dire Straits. That was not by design, but we do cover a few Dire Straits tunes, and we''ve been told for three-piece we''re as close to the real thing as one could hope for. So, if you like the sound of Dire Straits, you just might like the MSJ Project.
