The Morning Stars are an underground rock band from Hamilton, Canada. Formed by brothers Mars Ivic (vocals/guitar) and Michael Ivic (vocals/bass) circa 2003, and joined by Donn Dixon (drums). The band released their debut album “You Can’t Change The World” in 2006.
The quintessential independent band have been mostly ignored in their homeland, but have received appreciation overseas, receiving international press and radio play and in 2007 signed a publishing deal with Rough Trade Publishing (UK).
While the media were quick to tag the band with the “Britpop” label following the release of “You Can’t Change the World”, the new album “Radiation” (2009), marks a change in the bands musical direction. While still retaining a melodic quality, “Radiation” sheds light on the darker and more experimental aspects of electronic and psychedelic alternative rock. The new album features surprises blending different styles of music from electronic, jazz and rock, multi-layered with synthesizers, shimmering noise and conventional rock music instruments.
Lyrically, “Radiation” addresses more political and social themes, the band’s punk attitude, and a grittier more cinematic sound.
The band has cited their key musical influences to be The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and post punk, new wave acts such as The Ramones, Joy Division, and The Cure. Industrial and electronic bands Skinny Puppy,
Underworld and Massive Attack are also noted influences.
