Instrumental guitar and easy listening. Eclectic style, a unique fusion of jazz, pop, rock and roll, and, at times, Classical.

19 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Smooth Jazz, ROCK: Surf Rock

Details:
"Although Brian Frederick’s music can defy categorization, all of his songs display those qualities found in the best of instrumental popular music: the ability to create atmosphere and poetry without lyrics. His use of instrumental color, creative combination of sounds, conversational guitar style (which can be so close to the human voice it almost wails at times) picturesque melodies, and subtle nuance effectively tell stories without words."

Frederick has played guitar and keyboards since 1959, a self-taught composer. With the invention of the sequencer, synthesizer and multi-track recorders, the artist added drums, and many synthetic instruments, such as trombone, flute, and oboe to his sounds.

CRUISING LANE 2nd RELEASE c 2001
Frederick made some recordings in the 1960s and 1970s, but this was only a casual hobby. The composing continued for amost thirty years, when in 2002, Cruising Lane 2nd Release, a 19-song wonder emerged. Cruising Lane 2 is a compilation of many earlier keyboard tunes, and some attributed to the newer sequencer and synth tools of 2000.

"I remember taking a few piano lessons as a kid, but I spent much more time playing piano and guitar on my own, and learning from recordings from radio. I like to just play music, instinctively." When music is playing, I don’t hear anything but the music, not the lyrics and not any conversation. To me the expression “background music” is an oxymoron. When music is playing, I am dialed in to the music."

SHORT STORIES c 2002
"This album consists of guitar instrumentals, for the most part. I was working on another project at the University of Illinois in Urbana / Champaign at the time. Youth inspires.

"I took a music theory class as an adult. I wanted to learn how to read music and converse technically with other musicians. I found that learning basic music theory as an adult is not easy. The mental blocks one establishes over many years impede learning. Young persons can learn languages and music rapidly without the all of other clutter in the way. Music theory is arcane. The treble clef different than the bass clef. Twelve chromatic notes spanning a staff having only five lines. All supported by centuries of widespread acceptance."

LAKE SHORE NIGHTS c 2004
The Lakeshore Nights title song was inspired by the evening fresh sea breeze cooling the shoreline and bringing on the night. Runners, bikes, blades, cars, all follow their trails as twilight approaches. So I put that energy to work, and began building guitar and synthesizer recordings. Much of it was written in an apartment by the lake shore, on breezy summer nights. Some of that ambiance found its way into the music and title song. This is a continuation of the instrumental guitar and keyboard/synth work in Cruising Lane and Short Stories.

HILL CLIMB c 2005
The compositions are instrumentals containing solo works with guitar, keyboard, percussion, and synthetic parts such as the trombone. Trombone and trumpet are two of my favorite instruments (I can not play horn). The wonders of the 128 voice synthesizer come into play here. If I were to put these songs or type of music into a category, that would be "jazz and rock instrumental" in format. Each part of a song was recorded using Roland digital multi-track recording technology. All songs are solo performed by the artist. The one and only vocal attempt I have ever made, a cameo, is "Chrystal Clear" added some fun. It is full of musical foibles and gaffes, I think I will seek out real vocalists !

FAVORITE GUITARISTS
My favorite guitarists ? Jango Reinhart, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, and Mark Knopfler. But you can not overlook Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page...
