The BG Perkins Story

I grew up in Colorado, an only child with a great imagination. I began my musical endeavors in middle school and joined my first band when I was a freshman in high school. That band had three pieces – two guitars and drums (no bass). Our drummer was female, which at that time was extremely rare. We played several ‘Battle of the Bands’ and won numerous awards. We were also a very popular band for parties. I was first introduced to the bass guitar at another party I attended. The next week I bought a bass.

I played in a few more bands during high school and began playing clubs. In Colorado, the drinking age at that time was eighteen for 3.2 beer and 21 for anything else. There was a very active 3.2 bar scene, and there were always plenty of bands to fill the need.

Right after graduation, the band I was in at the time got our first ‘house band’ gig. The unfortunate part about the gig was that it was in Colorado Springs, which is sixty miles south of Denver, and I was going to college in Fort Collins, which is 80 miles north of Denver. I was commuting on a daily basis, going to school in Ft. Collins all day, then driving down to Colorado Springs to play every night. I’d finish the gig around 1:00 AM, drive back to Denver, sleep at my parent’s house, and then get up at 7:00 AM to drive back up to Ft. Collins to go to school all day again.

On one of my commutes, I was involved in a very serious car accident with a sugar beet truck and was forced to make a decision as to whether I would stay in Ft. Collins and go to school, or continue playing with the band and leave my educational pursuits for a while. I chose the latter, and thus began a sixteen-year stint as a professional musician.

Over the next several years, I played in various bands touring the Midwest and living on the road consistently for almost seven years. I finally ended up in California, spending two years in San Diego playing the local club scene before moving up to Los Angeles.

The manager of two child stars who had shows (Land of the Giants and Little House on the Prairie) on TV managed my first band in LA. The band had the opportunity to do the season premier of a very popular detective series (Switch) and got to work with some fairly famous actors including Robert Wagner, Eddie Albert and Sonny Bono. It was a wonderful experience and also allowed me to collect unemployment for almost two years, which paid the rent.

Friends from a previous midwestern band moved to LA, and we reformed as a new, all original band. We began playing at the local ‘showcase’ clubs such as The Whisky, The Starwood, The Troubadour, and others, in pursuit of a record deal. During that time, we often shared the stage with other local acts (later to be mega groups) such as Van Halen, Quiet Riot, and Motley Crew. My band was courted by several record labels, but ended up breaking up before we landed a deal.

After so many years of struggling to become ‘a star’, I had had enough, and when my wife became pregnant with my daughter, I decided to hang it up. I went back to school and got into computers (a wise choice). The day I picked up my diploma, we headed back to Colorado. I was fortunate enough to land a very good job in my new field and focused on my new life as a husband, father, and software engineer. After another child (a son) and many years of marriage, fatherhood, and computers, I had a musical ‘relapse’.

I was going through a divorce and realized that I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands. I still had my equipment and decided to fill some of those lonely moments by joining a ‘country’ band. After several weeks of rehearsal and a few gigs, the band decided to replace me because I was “a little too rock’n’roll”…something I realized was actually a compliment. During that time, I also began riding a Harley and took up scuba diving.

I’m now married again and owe much of my inspiration in my music to my new wife. I play in a local classic-rock band, ride my Harley, and travel the world to find the ‘perfect’ diving spots. I have released my first CD, Don’t Hold Your Breath, and have finished compiling 4 more – Tracks, No Outlet, What Happened?, and Writing On The Wall. I have also collaborated with 4-time Grammy nominee Terrance Bell on a rock-gospel original Christmas song which received worldwide airplay over the 2003/2004 Christmas holiday season (averaging over 13,000 spins per week).
