URBAN/R&B: Soul, ROCK: Funk Rock

Details:
The singer, songwriter, musician known to many as Boo Boo Cousins stepped on to the New York City music scene around the year 2002. He offered the CD to his audience, “LAID BACK COOL”. Now thought of as an eclectic brand of soul, heavy funk rhythms, electronic experimentation and acoustic drama blended all into one disc of quotable phrases and melodies. It’s been looked upon as a strong debut for this singer. This 15 song collection contains a special guest performance from Achuziam Maha, lead singer of the group ‘Everyanything’. You feel her warm presence on the song “Remember Lonely”. People can’t seem to forget “My One Weakness”. The soul tinged track reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield with guitars, organs and strings. The title track “Laid Back Cool” was used in an ad campaign for the clothing company ENYCE with great results.

Boo Boo played several shows throughout New York improving on stage while developing new material. He’s had the opportunity to play at The C-Note, The 5 Spot, The Chocolate Monkey, Joe’s Pub, Sputnik, Rare, The Lemon Bar, S.O.B’s, The Nuyorican Poetry Cafe, Bowery Poetry Club, City Tech College, Marymount College, The Schomberg Museum, Marcus Garvey Park, Fort Greene Park, The Remote Lounge, Crash Mansion, Chetty Red’s and CBGB’s Gallery among other venues.

And as a side man he has played guitar and sung background vocals for Ladybug Mecca of the Grammy Award Winning Group “Digable Planets”, The Delic, Nemiss, The Muse, Gayle Day, The Express Talent Showcase and a host of other singers, rappers and spoken word artists. He has been seen on the same bill as Roy Ayers, C.L. Smooth, The Last Poets, M1 of Dead Prez, and Brian Jackson (Gil Scott Heron).

In 2005 he hosted and performed at a weekly acoustic singer/songwriter showcase entitled “Boo Boo’s Living Room”. The event took place at the Chocolate Monkey in Brooklyn and saw an array of talented artists and bands that blessed the stage. Artists such as Cole Williams, Sparlha Swa, Rahj, DuEwa, Jamie Barr, Chanese, Madafi, Shades Of Red plus other local artists.

In November of 2005, “DIRECT SUNLIGHT” was released. This is the second CD from Mr. Cousins. This time there’s a fresh since of range in the production and music. Stripped downed to 11 songs at the last moment, from the beginning to the end you hear a strong urgency to get these songs out to the public. Maybe this is because there is more music to come. Everyone’s favorite songs on stage became ‘Daybreak’, ‘Want You In My Life’, ‘Direct Sunlight’ and ‘Kinder Elevation’. These titles alone sound dreamy, but you’re in for a treat once you hear the album. Songs like ‘Trippy Pills’ will have you trippin’. ‘Sugar Dumpling’ might make you blush. ‘Round & Round We Go’ could become your new anthem if you ever stop dancing. This time around you can hear the hip hop influence, plus the slow plush ballads aren’t left off this disc. The lyrical content throughout the CD deals with subjects such as love affairs, unrehearsed breakups, a better life, finding ‘that’ relationship and at one point in a song the main character is poppin’ pills. Some songs on this disc deal with life experiences that alter your perceptions on how things should be.

In 2006 there will be more shows and new music. There are already collaborations in the works. Let’s see which recordings get released. Look out world.
