Details:
Why ‘Music for Misanthropes’? Do ‘Splatter’ hate the world and the people in it? - Certainly not. Do Splatter think their music is particularly suited for people who have a distaste for the rest of humanity? - no, not really.

It’s just a bit of fun, a bit of a joke at our own expense, as the liner notes reveal:

‘You could say ‘Splatter’ are a bit of a mess. No doubt about it - they are all over the place. Shrug your shoulders. Roll your eyes. Reach for the sick bag. This is music for dung beetles, execrable flotsam from the rotting underbelly that passes for everyday life. This lamentable babbling is like scratching an already pustulating sore - a festering stew that relishes its own putrefaction, cherishing each tiny scabrous canker that passes for creativity.
You’d have to be brain dead to listen to this.’

There – we said it. So… are you sufficiently brain dead to have a listen?

Well, if you are – and for that you have our deepest compassion and hopes for a speedy recovery – we should tell you that ‘Splatter’ are a London based outfit consisting of Anna Kaluza (alto sax), Noel Taylor (clarinet), Raúl Monsalve (bass guitar) and Pharoah S Russell (drums). Recently we added flautist and sax player, July Kjaer but she isn’t represented here.

This album was recorded without preparation and is entirely improvised, with the exception of a few phrases on the track ‘Merciful End’. ''Free Jazz'' doesn’t adequately describe our music. We like the act of plunging headlong into a musical opening and then just seeing where it leads. We like abrupt changes, non-sequiturs, whimsical dead ends – but above all a feel for the shape of a song, buried there amidst the rubble of our playing. We aren’t wedded to the idea of being experimental or relentlessly innovative, and if the mood takes us we will go with a melody or settle into a groove. We often shift genres as we go along, but this reflects a welding together in real time of the tastes of four very different people, rather than any notion of post-modernism. We do play for fun, but very seriously.
