I was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada from the tender age of six weeks old. Born in Northern California Richard L. Allred to an Oklahoma boy and a Michigan girl. The subtle influence of southern heritage, and elemental gospel upbringing shaped much of the cultural foundation for my future. At the age of twelve I was given a guitar for Christmas and taught my first three chords. With no professional training to come by, I pretty much picked up pearls of wisdom by any means that would present itself.
In my latter teens a rebellious spirit unrelentingly rooted itself. For the next twenty-five years my jacked up soul took raising hell to another level. Motorcycles, women, music, drugs, guns, alcohol, became an unshakable way of life. Eventually, too much of living on the edge sent my human condition spinning out of control. Armed encounters with the law, death threats from ‘pillars of the community’, black listed from major corporate work forces, close friends murdered, were only part of the picture described in my lyrics as, “something was surely wrong”!
It wasn’t until after I accepted Jesus the Christ of Nazareth, Israel that a brand new purposeful and rewarding life began to unfold. The difference was literally like night and day. Part of these new found blessings included an old scooter tramp that had played for decades in honky-tonk circuits across the nation. His name is Dusty. He sat down with me and shared some pieces to a puzzle that made song writing possible. My first educated attempt at a musical composition was a gospel tune called ‘Jesus to the Bone’. Shoot, people seemed to legitimately enjoy it. That had never happened before. The same thing happened with the second, third, fourth tunes, and so on. It was truly amazing. I had tried to write music back in my heathen days and it sucked even by my standards.
Since then, I’ve had the honors to perform at such venues as live Christian radio, live television, concerts in the park, Thomas and Mack Center Las Vegas, Fremont Street Experience Third Street Stage Las Vegas, Spirit Fest 2003, as well as church concerts, motorcycle rally’s and runs, rescue missions, homeless feeds, and campfire gatherings to boot. I’ve probably forgot a couple of venues along the way too. All these places I received an invitation to share this music. Never once did I ask.
The point is this. When I was a heathen, nothing this cool ever happened to me that amounted to anything. Matter of fact, doors of opportunity would open and then for some stupid reason slam shut; done deal. This happened one hundred percent of the time. Now, one could argue that I was an expert at shooting myself in the foot. Who knows, maybe that was true. I personally don’t think so. Here’s why.
Now that I’ve accepted the man that Christmas and Easter holidays give honor to, I’ve watched doors of opportunity slam shut and then reopen, slam shut again and reopen. It’s like a fight going on to gain control of my demise or success. Except, this time success has been winning out. That is no coincidence. This CD has been a long spiritual battle. I’m excited just to finally share it with folk. Therefore, it is my prayer that the listener will feel the spirit of this music and be blessed big time. If that same listener through this music can catch a glimpse of the quality of life I’m living, ain’t no doubt here they’re going to want to get some of that.
