Details:
When the four smith sisters decided to produce their first album, ‘Common Ground’, they wanted to create something meaningful and impactful to the lives of their listeners. They chose to record a tribute to the essence of women. Each song illuminates the qualities, characteristics, emotions, experience, and value of all that ‘is’ woman.

For example, Smith4’s song, ‘The Shawl’ pays honor to a mother who must send her son off to war. There is something especially compelling about a mother giving her son up to a war because wars are, historically, the peculiar business of men. Children, on the other hand, are seen primarily as the work of women. In Civil War times, sons were given up by their mothers particularly early-first to men’s tasks and then to their fighting. This song was inspired by a scene described in McArthy’s Detailed Minutiae of a Soldier’s Life, in which he gives an account of a soldier wrapping his mother’s shawl around his shoulders to shield him from the cold. It did not take much imagining to place the soldier back at home at the moment of departure, nor to picture the mother’s anxiety in seeing him go. Finally, it did not take much to imagine her wishing that the shawl would provide for him protection from more than just the cold. A shawl is a wonderful symbol for how we should be-and how we would be if only mothers could have their way.

This is just one example of the touching themes that course through Smith4’s music.

As a more personal insight, this album took on a significant deeper meaning to the sisters when just a few short months after the release of ‘Common Ground’, one of the sisters, Sharwan, lost her life in a tragic auto accident. As almost an afterthought, just before the album’s release, Sharwan added the final song to the album, which she wrote, titled ‘Song of the Seasons’; a metaphor “for our relationship as sisters. We each bring something different and very special to that relationship-and we’re never happier than when we’re all together.”(Sharwan Smith) Interestingly enough, the Sharwan’s lyrics in this song relates,
“Shining on this road I’m walking,
Headed home tonight,
Memories have built a bridge, across the times we’ve shared,
Seasons we’ve made all our own, and I will meet you there.”

Enjoy this album and feel the same inspiration that went into the creation of Smith4’s ‘Common Ground’.
