Randy Weinstein Group -- ''09 Sessions

The Randy Weinstein Group plays straight-ahead jazz inflected with Delta blues, Southern string band, and Latin American sounds. Weinstein has been playing jazz, blues, and Appalachian harmonica professionally for over two decades and has always sought to express the common thread he heard in these distinct genres. The sound for "''09 Sessions" came to Weinstein in a dream where he participated in a community square dance grooving to the bebop anthem "Donna Lee," expressing all of the tune''s angular contours and asymmetries in festive group choreography. Rather than deriving a contrived fusion music from this inspiration, Weinstein woke up to a flexible, inclusive approach to small ensemble jazz performance that retraces the steps of this dream dance. It sways to the pulse of American and Carribbean roots musics without stumbling on their clichés. The ensemble presents sure-footed original statements of familiar standards that place emphasis on the ensemble groove, with solos providing laconic counterpoint.

You will hear strong underlying unity within an appealing diversity on Weinstein''s solo outing, "''09 Sessions." The blues implications of the standard "Sweet and Lovely" are bundled into a grooving ballad that pays homage to the brilliant chromatic harmonica work of the legendary Little Walter. Wayne Shorter''s mid-tempo dirge "Armageddon" is seamlessly adapted to the shuffle rhythms of the Little Johnny Taylor classic "Cheaper to Keep Her." "The Snake," a Weinstein original, is a Mississippi Delta blues drone featuring a call-and-response head statement and the deep, incisive guitar groove of bebop/blues-adept Michael Gomez. Tuey Connell''s banjo-influenced picking pattern on the classic "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" suggests an Appalachian string band as the ensemble deftly alternates between a lilting country feel and a finger-popping swing groove. A similar sensibility informs Wayne Shorter''s up-tempo cooker "Prince of Darkness," which again features Connell''s original fingerpicking bop guitar work. Thelonious Monk''s "Jackie-ing" and Duke Ellington''s "Come Sunday" get the full "string band" treatment, with Connell switching to banjo, Gomez playing guitar and lap steel, and jazz tuba virtuoso Joe Daley added to the mix. Lee Morgan''s bossa "Ceora" is converted to a jaunty Jamaican ska vehicle propelled by the infectious drum work of Rich Huntley. The Carribbean influence also appears on the standard "You Stepped Out of a Dream," where Northern Brazilian afoxé rhythms alternate with medium-tempo swing sections. Bassist Cassidy Holden consistently harmonizes contrasting rhythmic tendencies on all the tunes, providing a solid, sustained, dance-worthy feel throughout.

Weinstein has recorded and performed with Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson, appearing on three of her records: Azure-Té, Collage, and Daydream. In 1998, he co-founded Hazmat Modine, whose 2006 album "Bahamut" was nominated for the 2008 BBC Best World Music Album of the Year award. He also co-authored the "Complete Idiot''s Guide to Playing the Harmonica," a best-selling diatonic harmonica instruction book.
