Details:
Here is the story of Napalm Beach''s "Rock & Roll Hell."

1983. Chris Newman and Sam Henry of Napalm Beach had taken up residence in San Francisco, but decided to return to Portland that July to play a coffeehouse in Portland, a clothing store in Seattle (the only places an underground band could find to play back then) and to record an album with the Wipers'' Greg Sage.

The recording sessions took place in an unfinished house in Estacada, Oregon, where the band camped for a week while recording under Sage''s unique methods. First, Sage had Newman play all the songs on bass with a click-track. Guitars were dubbed next, and to the band''s surprise, drums added last. It seemed crazy, but it worked, thanks to Sam''s drumming skills.

During the session Sam''s mother called Sage to tell him that Sam''s first love and live-in girlfriend, Catherine, had overdosed and died back in San Francisco, but not to tell Sam about it until his drum overdubs were finished. It was a heart-wrenching time. The live cut #13, Night Train, recorded at the 13th Precinct club in Portland a few weeks later, is dedicated to Catherine.

Tracks 6, 11, 12, and 13 (Too Much Fun, Down in New Orleans, Pugsly, and Night Train) are all taken from that performance at the 13th Precinct. Tracks 14-18 are from taken from a 1982 performance at the Metropolis club (now Dante’s Inferno on SW 2nd and Burnside, Portland) and were originally published on the 1982 cassette "Live at the Met." All other tracks are from the 1983 Estacada recording session with Sage.
