Many people have asked me what Bengalese Butterflies means. Well, I was reading the Life of Pi and was taken with the vision of a Bengalese Tiger and a boy living together on a boat in the middle of the sea. At the time I was in Europe and was experiencing "butterflies" in my stomach on an hourly basis. I began envisioning huge butterflies hovering over the city of Barcelona and I couldn''t get them out of my mind. I had already written about half of the songs that ended up on the album, most out of heartache and a longing to break out of negative patterns that kept re-occurring in my life. I wrote the title track "Bengalese Butterflies" in Spain, then moved to Austin, TX where I began a three year long road of desolate soul-searching. The rest of the songs were born out of the fruits of digging deep to find renewed meaning and hope in my life. Caterpillars live a precarious existence. Ugly and vulnerable, they make their way through the world only to hang themselves from a ledge and slip into a coma. All the while having complete faith that a miracle will occur and they will emerge a courageous butterfly, beautiful, airborne and proof that faith in your own limitless potential turns dreams into reality.
