I met Anthony Weller in 1992 after being introduced to him by my fellow doctoral classmate at New England Conservatory Phil Swanson. I little more about Phil later…
I was invited by Phil to meet Anthony and play a weekly jazz gig with Chamber Jazz at the Franklin in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Each week was something to look forward to. Oftentimes North Shore musicians would sit in, such as Dave Landoni, Thomas Hebb and the great Herb Pomeroy. There were always great musical moments, great food, friends and stories to be told and lots of laughs! While I’m presently living in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa, our weekly gigs have no turned into annual events with return trips to the States and now Europe to play with Anthony.
Over the years I believe Anthony and I have developed an intimate musical relationship and friendship. Two required key ingredients when playing in any duo format. As a horn player, I believe the duo is one of the most challenging and musically rewarding groups to play in do the high levels of musical understanding and metal telepathy that is needed to make it happen; there is no hiding in duo playing!
Anthony does it all as a jazz guitarist on this recording. A great ‘comper’ knowing exactly when and how to musically accommodate what I’m playing at a particular split-second moment. A strong bass and rhythm player; Anthony is an entire rhythm section in one. Anthony’s ability a soloist as you’ll witness on the cd is simply outstanding; check out his solo renditions on The Look of Love, Blue Monk, My One and Only Love; simply brilliant and beautiful.
While you’re sure to recognize these great standards heard on this cd, performing and interpreting them on multiple woodwinds with Anthony gives them a whole new dimension and meaning.
