Spitting Up Roses was Melany Joy Beck''s debut album. Released in early 1996, it became a midwest college staple bolstered by the soaring melodies of "Not That Strong," a track originally featured on The Misery Sessions, Vol. 3 soundtrack. One of the stars of the late-nineties Houghton Music Scene, Beck captured the attention of producer / guitarist Bernie Larsen who produced SUR with the same canny intuition he used to elevate the sounds of Melissa Etheridge and Lucinda Williams. Though, packaged pop acts like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys pushed literate girl rock off the charts in the latter part of the decade, the record lives on as a time capsule to a more thoughtful age.
