Seventeen years ago, pianist/composer Jon Baroni and lyricist TD Hall met at a small coffee shop in western Washington state. Jon sat down at a white grand piano and started to play; Hall handed him one of his lyrics. Thus began a collarboration that led, over the years, to the writing of more than fifty songs, some of the best of which appear on this album.
"Wake Up Calls" has been described variously as fusion, environmental, and avant-guarde. Two of the songs caused Cy Grant, London-based author of the definitive book on the steel pan, to liken Jon to "Sting." (Jon himself regards Peter Gabriel as his major influence.) Other songs, such as "Sacred Ground" and "Forgiveness," anticipated, years ago, a kind of sacramental music, rich in harmonics, that has recently become very popular, via "Celtic Woman" and other groups.
