Lo-fi, garage-rock phenom One Man Dan is back with his second release, Fame & Attention.
His name is Dan Davila, and he is a true one-man rock band. He uses no looping, nothing pre-recorded, and no drum machines. He does it live, simultaneously. The songs are melodic, lyrical and anthemic, but his second effort is more diverse than last year''s No Such Thing. Ranging from folk rock tear-jerkers to garage blues and acid grunge, Davila proves his DIY efforts are more than a gimmick. In “Like Those Before You,” Davila''s ode to local pre-grunge heroes Run Westy Run, he reveals his propensity for idol worship, a key ingredient in the personality of any scenester. In “Alive,” he dreams repeatedly that his dead father still lives, forcing him to deal with bitter disappointment each time he wakes.
Musically, it is apparent that his skills and his rig have evolved, but he still draws heavily on the early punk and classic garage band era. For this album, he has added a more traditional element in tunes like “Caledonia,” with it''s two-step beat and haunting harmonica, or his choice to close the record with “The Preacher and the Slave,” an old Joe Hill song that the Wobblies used to sing.
The album was produced, engineered and mixed by Rich Mattson (2007''s Minnesota Music Academy Producer of the Year) at Sparta Sound, in Sparta, Minnesota. It was done live except for the vocals and recorded on 1" analog tape. It was mastered by Tom Herbers at Creation Studios in Minneapolis.
