“Two years ago, I thought I wanted to be an accountant,” laughs A. Rex co-founder Andrew Espinola. While at university, Andrew (piano, guitar, vocals) met friend and future bandmate Nick Kirbo (bass). A providential encounter in the library led to an impromptu jam session in a friend’s barn that begat A. Rex. The two began to meet regularly using their friend’s barn as the primary rehearsal spot. Sessions started around midnight and generally ended when either: a) beer had run out OR b) the space heater broke (which it often did). It was the middle of January and both Espinola and Kirbo were under 160lbs.
“The idea for A. Rex actually came from a pet name my girlfriend had for me,” recalls Andrew. “I think she was trying to make me sound tougher. She always complained I looked like a software programmer.” Espinola and Kirbo finally settled on the name A. Rex in April 2006 after obsessing over band names for months. “We would devote entire nights to just brainstorming band names. We had these really awful names we were coming up with like, The Mental Patients or The Shopping Carts. For some reason we just couldn’t think of anything good.”
A. Rex entered the studio January 2006 to record their debut album, “Brief as Lightning” with producer and songwriter Mark Addison (Bob Schneider, Honey Browne, The Honorary Title, and Gene Simmons). The record was finished in a matter of weeks and released on India Records in May 2006. Espinola and Kirbo are currently planning a tour to promote the record.
