Biography

Art Reynolds has written music since the age of 10. In 1955, his grandmother bought an old upright piano for $5 from the local church, spent $200 having it fixed up, and had it delivered to the family home, all with a sense of urgency. It was made of shiny blond wood that reflected the sunlight that came through the window facing it. Art often saw his reflection in the mirror on top of the piano and constantly told himself that one day he would be a songwriter and singer. Little did he know that the reflection he saw would one day be the reflection of things to come-all of which would define his music and, ultimately, become a platform for his beliefs.

Doll, Art''s grandmother, would take him to local churches and large traveling revival meetings so he could receive prayer to help cure him of his severe childhood asthma attacks. She encouraged him to preach at the local Church of God In Christ; she took him to A.A. Allen, Reverend Ike, Oral Roberts and Jimmy Swaggert''s old campground revival meetings to receive prayer. It was those revivals and small church services that provided the impetus for his appreciation and love for gospel music.

Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Art Reynolds attended Franklin Jr. High School, Long Beach Poly High and Cal State Long Beach. He married shortly after finishing high school and had 2 children, Byron and Brooke. He currently has one grandson, Justin. For 13 years, he played the piano and directed the choir for local Long Beach churches, including Grant Chapel A.M.E., St. Vestal, C.M.E., St. John Baptist and New Hope Baptist.

It was in the late 1960''s that Art took the 5 best singers from his choir at the St. Vestal C.M.E. church and created the gospel singing group, the "Art Reynolds Singers". As the first gospel group to record for Capital Records, they soon became pioneers in the development of "gospel rock". Many considered their music too secular for the time. Their first album "Tellin'' It Like It Is", went on to become one of the biggest selling albums for a new gospel group. It received local and national acclaim. "Jesus Is Just Alright" was the first song recorded by other groups from the "Tellin'' It Like It Is" album. The song was recorded and made famous by the Byrds, the Doobie Brothers and DC Talk. Four other albums followed: "Long Dusty Road", "The Soul-Gospel Sounds of the Art Reynolds Singers" and "It''s a Wonderful World". Art later recorded an independent live gospel concert album titled, "A Work of Art". One of the original members of the Art Reynolds Singers was Thelma Houston, who went on to become a Grammy Award-winning singer with her recording of "Don''t Leave Me This Way", an anthem of the disco era. Art later changed the name of the group to the "Art Forms Limited" and produced 2 singles for RCA records, "I''m a Bad Man" and "Time to Call It A Day". Wolfman Jack described Art''s vocal on "I''m a Bad Man", as the birth of a new Isaac Hayes.

In the early 90''s, Art teamed with Bunny Hull to write the title song, "Are you Ready For A Miracle" for the motion picture "Leap of Faith" starring Steve Martin. Bunny had already received great accolades for writing "I''ve Got a New Attitude" for Patti LaBelle. By the way, Patti LaBelle and Edwin Hawkins recorded "Are You Ready For a Miracle" on the "Leap of Faith" soundtrack album, which Time magazine called "masterful".

The National Football League Player''s Association commissioned Art and Joey Guerra to write original music for a video about the association which is currently shown to all new NFL players.

Over the ensuing years, Art focused his writing skills on three types of music: gospel, dance and ballads. Now he is currently launching a nationwide performance tour. He has teamed with Cody Williams and Ken Hankins (co-producers and engineers), to produce a live show that fuses live music with tracts, live vocals and percussion.

Take one listen and you will know the music of Art Reynolds is not only innovative and uplifting, but downright feel good music.
