Retro Nouveau has its musical and personal roots deep in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. All the musicians associated with the band have an almost, no, make that a real, spiritual association with Rock, Blues and Jazz. It is in their blood and in their spirit. It is who they are. Allan Bilka (guitar, vocals and bass) has played with drummers Allan Strug and Dennis Sowa in various rock and jazz/rock fusion based ensembles over the years and bassist Ray Bilka’s blues/rock spirit is a fresh addition to the mix. Retro Nouveau is an effort to release the combined energy of those musical genres. Their music is far from Smooth Jazz or Soft Rock. But neither is it strictly Alternative or Modern Rock. As the lyrics of Contrarian (Track 2) pronounce, they “like their jazz heavy, not light”. But this certainly isn’t Metal, nor is it straight ahead Jazz by any means. Many have tried, some successfully, to combine rock, jazz and blues. None, however, have attempted to blended Retro and sometimes almost Pop Rock vocals with Alternative Rock and edgy Jazz/Rock Fusion, until now. This is not formula rock. It refuses to be pigeon-holed. It is truly American rock music with an improvisational and non-trendy melodic base – music that offers a little bit of something for many musical tastes. Retro Nouveau sincerely hopes you enjoy the challenge of all the varied mind foods that their menu of musical vibrations has to offer. But they advise some caution, as it might be more than some narrow or closed musical minds may be able to digest.
