Virginia is a strange place. Located in the center of the Eastern Seaboard, it is a land where north meets south, cities stretch to meet farmland, and tradition meets progress. Oftentimes, these juxtapositions create conflict. However, on occasion, these entities blend together to create things that are, at the same time, familiar and original.
Born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1981, Allen Thompson is not unlike the land that he calls home. At a very young age Allen began showing interest in the Bluegrass, Country, Soul, and Southern Rock music that came from the mountains of Southwest Virginia where he was born. Allen’s love for music and its ability to speak to people in such strong ways did not end with the music he found in the churches, flea markets, radios, and record players of his hometown however. Allen was constantly searching for new and vibrant sounds that would transport him from the Blue Ridge Mountains to various points all around the world.
At six, Allen began singing in the choir at church. The thrill of performing in front of an audience was so great that he has not stopped performing publicly for more than a few weeks at a time since. For the past 18 years, Allen has sung, played guitar, or done both for various choirs, theater ensembles, and bands. Now Allen is on his own. For the past year he has been playing solo acoustic shows that are very intimate and personal. This format is about to undergo some serious changes, however.
Allen is currently playing with an amazing group of musicians known as The Easy Chairs. The Easy Chairs are a terrific rock band. They allow Allen’s trademark sounds to be heard loud and clear, giving audiences a taste of the music that has been in Allen’s head for years.
While countless artists have blended the extremes of Country, Rhythm & Blues, and Rock & Roll to create a new and original sound, very few have done it the way Allen Thompson does. His lyrics, while not always the most cheerful or optimistic, are honest and heartfelt. His musical arrangements are powerful and command attention. When blended together they create a new sound that is unmistakably Allen Thompson’s.
Highway is a must own record for anyone who cares about strong and honest music. It isn’t the Country, R&B, or Rock you see on television. It’s Allen Thompson Music and it’s definitely worth hearing.
