This is a CDR made for the RPM Challenge.
The RPM Challenge:
This is the challenge: record an album in 28 days, just because you can.
That’s 10 songs or 35 minutes of original material recorded during the month of February.
Go ahead… put it to tape.

From Bryan:
In Early February we started talking about how we were going to go about
this challenge of trying to get a CD written, recorded, mixed, mastered, and
duplicated in one month. We decided there was only one way with our tight
schedules; do it all live in one night! So on Feb 15th we got together to
arrange and record 35 minutes of new material. It is mostly stuff we had
been messing around with but weren''t actually complete songs yet for the
most part. We set up in Eric''s basement/studio/jam space in Barrington to
record live into his digital multi-track recorder. Eric had spent some time
prior setting up the mics and cords, getting drum and bass sounds, etc. I
plugged my guitar (Strat or Les Paul depending on the song) into my new 30W
Laney class A combo but disconnected the speaker and instead plugged in my
old 1970 4x12 Marshall cabinet. All the music was recorded live that night,
except the vocals which were added on later to get good separation. The
only other guitar I recorded later was one extra track on "Place to Stay".
For that I used my Les Paul (thanks Tom!) through my Marshall JMP head and
the cabinet. All the other songs are one-guitar, one-take so any mistakes
we just left in. I think the vibe of the night came through and that was
what was important. It was a good night.

We were going to use the Tascam 4 track cassette recorder that we normally
use to capture ideas during rehearsal but we would have been limited to only
4 tracks. We decided to use the Akai DPS12 digital hard disk recorder that
we used to record our first CD, ( https://www.tradebit.com )
because it has 12 tracks. The DPS12 can record 6 tracks at once. We used 4
for drums, 1 for bass and 1 for electric guitar. Both the kick and snare
drum were recorded on a separate track. The other two tracks were used for
high tom/low tom and overhead microphones to create a stereo mix. The bass
guitar was recorded directly to avoid leakage, so the only way we could hear
it was through the headphones we were all wearing. We pointed Bryan''s guitar
cab away from the drums and created makeshift walls by draping blankets over
mic stands. This worked surprisingly well. There was hardly any guitar
leakage in the drum Tracks. Since we could only record 6 tracks at once,
there was no room for the vocals. Bryan and I recorded the vocals later. To
make the guitar part sound bigger I copied Bryan''s guitar track to another
track so I could pan them in stereo. I also moved the copied track ahead
slightly in time to help make the guitar track sound bigger.
Extras:
- Added reverse cymbal to the beginning of "Lately"
- Recorded and added AM static to the beginning of "Being There"
- Added keyboard to "Being There"
- Added egg shaker to "Reconsider"
- Added backwards insane asylum to beginning of "Feeling Funny"
- Added keyboards to lead section of "Feeling Funny"
- Recorded and added my toilet flushing for the Beginning of "Washed Away"
- Added Moog Rogue wind sound to "Incubass"
Since the instrumentation was relatively simple, and time was tight, I was
able to mix down the DPS12 tracks to my computer by hand.
I normally us a midi sequencer to assist in the mixdown process. This is the
method I''m currently using to mix down our new CD, "The Wreckage".
The mixdowns were performed in one night, which is not the best scenario.
They all came out good enough though. I did remix "Reconsider" after the CD
had already been submitted to RPM.
