Allan Curtis Barnes







Born in Detroit, Michigan on September 27th Allan Barnes received his first musical training from his uncle, Robert Barnes.



After participating in various ensembles in the Detroit Public School system, in 1967, Allan enlisted in the United States Army where he was trained at the Army Element of the U.S. Naval School of music. From there, Fort Riley, and the 437th Army Band became his new home. After a year in the 437th, duty took him to South Vietnam and the 4th Division Army Band.


After being discharged, Allan traveled and studied until finally coming home to Detroit in 1971. The Ebony Set became Allan''s new musical family until the fall of https://www.tradebit.com luck would have it, Allan''s'' Uncle, Joe Barnes, told the legendary educator and trumpet player, Donald Byrd of Allan''s gift.


On his uncle''s recommendation, Donald invited Allan to attend Howard University. Shortly after arriving at Howard, Allan began touring the world with Donald''s band while attending Howard University. During that time, the band itself received a recording contract with Fantasy Records. With the band becoming "The Blackbyrds''", with Kevin Toney on piano, Joe Hall - bass, Perc Jacobs - percussion, Keith Killgo - drums and Barney Perry - guitar.



The bands'' first album went gold with Allan writing two of the songs... "Summer Love" and "The Blackbyrds'' Theme". The bands'' second album "Flying Start" contained the hit single "Walking in Rhythm", with Allan being featured on the flute.



After completing his studies at Howard, Allan toured with Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson and The Midnight Band. During that period, Allan and John Malone had a single, "Disco Dancin"'', on the first "Taste of Honey" album.



Moving back to Detroit in 1979, Allan began playing with the Lyman Woodard Organization. The Paradise Theatre Orchestra and "Shoo-be-doo" as well as "The Exciting Allan Barnes Band"



In 1982, Allan moved to Los Angeles, California. Upon arriving in California, Allan had the good fortune of working with the David Ii and the Love Ii Orchestra, where he met the legendary trombonist, Fred Wesley. While living in Los Angeles, Allan also worked as well as recorded with Nina Simone, Lee Oscar, Pini Cohen, Bennie Maupin, Wilson Pickett, Lakeside, Ceri Lucas, Prince, Clint Eastwood (The feature film "bird") and The Mizell Brothers. Allan featured his composition skills, writing and producing the music for the P.B.S. Show "Small Business Magazine".



In 1993, Allan stared a new exciting chapter in his life by relocating to Detroit. Shortly after arriving in Detroit, Allan worked briefly with Marcus Belgrave. Thereafter he became a member of Harold McKinney''s band with Rod Hicks and Johnny Cleaver.



Since then, Allan has recorded with Bootsie Collins, the Detroit Experiment, The Dramatics, The Interzone Orchestra, Reggie Braxton and Sunny Girl. Mr. Barnes also co-wrote with R. Kelly "Money makes the world go `round" and the station I.D. theme for the University of Michigan public TV. Allan also has his own group called "Prime Time".



. Allan also received, "The Spirit of Detroit" award from the Detroit City Council for co-writing, with Jimmy Rutherford, "Cease fire now". Allan Barnes is a gifted instrumentalist, writer and teacher, whose work will stand for years to come.
