Andrew Jackson’s songs come from a place within him that needs no introduction. Listen with an open mind, and his songs will take you there.
Early influences came in the form of a good helping of neo-psychedelic brit-rock he consumed in his teen years and early 20’s; music that formed a familiar framework to entrench his ideas in Euro-otherness. Jackson confesses an obsession with Brian Eno, Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Who, John Lennon & The Beatles, The Bonzo Dog Band, Kraftwerk, The Stranglers, The Smiths... but he’s equally influenced by the down-home American variety: Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Sparks, The Ramones.
Still, there’s an altogether personal style that permeates Jackson’s output -- both as a solo artist and in his collaborative work (with Zru Vogue & Science Patrol). Jackson’s arrangements run the gamut from acoustic to electric to electronic -- there are no rules but that the end result must be evocative, compelling, worthy.
On this album, Jackson starts with an intimate collection of new songs strummed quietly on acoustic guitar, then adds and subtracts as the song demands: a fuzz bass here, a piano there, hand drum, or simple percussion. The arrangements are unembellished, direct, so you get the feeling that he''s here in the room singing to you directly.
