Ok, so here is the truth about this recording. I originally recorded the sounds as background sound for my Welcome to Earth: Explorations in Body Awareness and Relaxation CD when I realized that having just a voice recording with no background sounds was a virtual impossibility.
I always enjoyed hiking up to the old tunnel since it was only a 20 minute walk from my house. I enjoyed listening to the sounds of water echoing through the tunnel and the other ambient sounds of the mountain. I took my recording equipment up with me and recorded the sounds just to see what it was like. Then I made a discovery that one friend had warned me about. He said “It is almost impossible to listen anywhere and not hear the sound of an internal combustion engine.” His statement was supported by my recording. When you listened carefully you could hear cars, airplanes, lawnmowers, all far off in the distance. I wanted to find a way to solve this problem.
Time was the answer. I decided to hike up there during the quietest hours of the day which is about 3:00 am. So I got up early one August morning, put my recording gear in my backpack and then heading out the door heard my wind chimes. I loved their sounds so I decided to add it. I grabbed them off the porch, stuck them in my backpack and head up the mountain.
I was very happy with the recording but I decided to add the sound of a small rushing creek to it for my Welcome to Earth CD. The small rushing creek added just enough sound to override the noise of a solo voice recording.
Years later I was working on sleep inducing recording for a friend. I just pulled out the tunnel recording to use in the background without the additional rushing stream sound. The friend I gave it to said, “I’d like a copy of that background sounds to play to my massage clients, it is really quite soothing.”
So that shifted my perspective, rather than looking the recording as a background sound, I listened to it again as a foreground sound, as an ambient sound. I discovered something magic. The sounds of the water dripping and echoing through the tunnel along with the crickets were mesmerizing. The chimes add a trance inducing quality to the work. Similar to Tibetan meditation bells, they induced a very relaxing brain wave state.
I found the recording to be very trance inducing.
Playing the sounds as background in my home also brought a measure of calmness and relaxation to everyday chores, as if they activated a brain state of “everything is alright, be calm.”
I wish to share this with you.
