"Everyone else is doing it!" is not a phrase one generally likes to hear from a 14 year old. But, in the case of Phillip Wise, "everyone else" playing guitar led to him to pick one up as well. He joined in with his dad and a couple of friends during some impromptu jam sessions and soon the student surpassed the masters.
Drawing on a wide variety of musical influences, Phillip''s songs emerge from scenes of everyday life. His most recent, "Solo Cup of Coffee" came to him while he was unloading the dishwasher. Of songwriting he says, "you can''t stress over it...just let it come."
Phillip is inspired by the storytelling ability of Robert Earl Keen, the solo artistry of Matthew West and the unique sound of multi-genre artists like Ryan Bingham and Cross Canadian Ragweed. And now at the age of 16, he is ready to release his debut CD. WIth a maturity far beyond his years, songs like "Waitin" and title track, "Solo Cup of Coffee" give insight into love lost and found. "Stormy Weather" was not intended to live past its origins as an English assignment. But the swinging blues rhythm and vocal freedom of the song have made it one of Phillip''s favorites. And "Road" take listeners on a musical journey through the eyes of a lonely traveler who realizes the road is his only trustworthy companion.
Phillip''s laid back approach to life is evident in his ability to pick up a guitar and play at any given moment whether for an small intimate crowd or in front of 1600 people at the Colorado State FFA Convention. With a style all his own and his distinctive voice, Phillip captivates the listener and draws them in just enough to leave them wanting more. Wise in his songwriting, Phillip truly has the unique quality of giving songs people can relate to and identify with.
