The Sparrow’s Essay: Hope and encouragement flow from every line. Sitting on a fence staring at me in the dead of winter in Minnesota, a sparrow seemed to “speak” to me: "A sparrow softly spoke to me ~ As I thrashed around in my care ~ Boldly whispering in my ear ~ Are you tangled in a snare? ~ Consider me the sparrow ~ Aren''t you worth more? ~ Just move over and allow Him to pour..." As the rest of the lyrics flowed into my mind—I could not write fast enough to keep up. What about you? Aren''t you worth more than a sparrow?

Desperate for You: During my fourth (NOT A TYPO - there were four) abusive marriage, the strife was mind bending. This song was my cry to Jesus from a desperate heart full of pain. He drew me back daily from deep despair for five years. He had "spoken" to me, "Cancel the wedding." I was stubborn. Glory to God for His mercy! I finally learned what I could not have learned otherwise: No matter what, God’s Love, His Grace, His Mercy are there for the asking. Unbelief haunted me daily. For five years I thought God had tossed me out. No way! He was proving His love to me!

About to Fly Free: Transformation can be a messy process as we grow from the “caterpillar” mode: spiritual metamorphosis. When this song came to me, (after that fourth marriage) I was in the "cocoon" where real growth happened in a safe place where I could grow. It was some of the most intense pain I had ever felt. My professional counselor told me, “You are in a wilderness experience. Just cooperate with it.” I exclaimed angrily, "What?!" Then I listened and started seeking what there was to learn. I hope this song inspires you in your process of growth. The pain is inevitable; let this song comfort you in yours.

Hallelujah, God is Good: This song is a lively celebration of God’s goodness. The “should’uh-could’uh-would’uhs “ of life just don’t count, when we are focused on Who Jesus is and what He did for us. We can repent and be washed as we overcome by the blood of the Lamb. This song is favorite to some of my friends.

When Wisdom Speaks, Ya Better Listen: The book of Proverbs shows that Wisdom cries in the streets for those who have ears to hear. It is all around us if we will believe it and stop leaning on our own understanding. When I received this song, (I cannot refer to it as having "written it"...it simply began flowing through my mind in 1995 while I held a tape recorder while driving my car), I was not listening to Wisdom. It took me years and much pain before I finally got it. Now I am learning to listen! I hope you will internalize the rich meaning of this song.

Stay by the Fire: God gave me this song for wounded women in Hiding-Hurting-Healing, a ministry for abused women in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Sometimes the women are prone to dropping out of the program because it is a painful journey to come out of hiding, confess the hurting, and move into the healing. This song has made a difference for some of them. How about you?

I Love You, Jesus: Why do believers love Jesus? This song expresses my worship in realizing Christ’s desire to heal my heart and cleanse me from all guilt and shame. These lyrics came percolating through my mind as I walked along that summer day in 1996, all caught up in the Lord’s presence.

I Gave the Devil a Black Eye: In Jesus’ name this is a song of victory from my experience in that fourth abusive marriage. I learned that in the authority Jesus gave to all believers to speak in His name, I could rise above my natural responses, give the grace away I had received, be forgiving, and refuse to be judgmental and angry. I could function with the mind of Christ.
I was not always successful. The devil, however, did not win because I overcame by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus the Christ.
