Details:
Latin rhythms have long been a staple of jazz, in particular the Samba and the bossa nova (a Brazilian admixture of Samba and jazz) which were woven into the mainstream of jazz by Tito Puente and Carlos Jobim teaming up with Stan Getz for their hit Girl From Ipanema in 1962. With this album we included a variety of Latin rhythms and some straight ahead jazz. In both types of music we were delighted by the driving and mystical guitar of Rod Fleeman on O Grande, Cherokee, and Indian Summer. Julie "One-Take" Turner does the vocal on Time To Go. Paul Smith, whom I consider a great piano player in a city that is blessed with a surfeit of great piano players, and Bob Bowman, who not only keeps time, but plays the most beautiful bass solos I have heard anywhere, are both on all tracks. The precise percussion is provided by my regular drummer, Michael Warren, who always sounds better than he did the last time I heard him. Todd Strait joins us on Bosphorus Cymbals and Yamaha Drums for Green Dolphin Street. Stan Kessler''s beautiful trumpet tone is heard on "Sway". Enjoy. - Mike White

This CD is dedicated to the memory of Norman O. Sanders, who spent his life helping kids that couldn''t make it in a traditional school setting. Norman was a graduate of DeLaSalle High School, which became what is today the DeLaSalle center, a high school that teaches those that others have given up on, the drop-outs and the push-outs. He became a successful trial laawyer, but never forgot his roots. Until he died in 2008, he was a tireless booster for DeLaSalle. All of the proceeds from the sale of this CD go to DeLaSalle Education Center. Founded in 1971, it was the first fully accredited private alternative school in the Kansas City area, and is now the region''s only private secular alternative school system educating nearly 350 urban youth daily at three schools. Mike White has enjoyed success in three careers, as a lawyer, politician and tenor saxophonist. Prioritize those any way you want, but Mike was playing the horn professionally long before he entered those other performance venues. He''s worked with Ralph Martieri, Cab Calloway, Eddie Cleanhead Vincent, Herb Ellis and a host of other jazz greats, and appears as a featured performer on several albums with stantouts such as Jay McShann and Kevin Mahogany. The Tiempo sessions include the musicians with whom he performs frequently on the Kansas City jazz scene.
