Details:
This is the sound art of a visualist, a filmmaker and draftsperson who also puts his hand to audio. The pieces are akin to image collages made from magazine color shards. This is radiophonic plunderphonia, informed by years of presenting radio shows on small FM radio stations. These loop collages seek to locate an entirely original sound vocabulary, a glitch aesthetic akin to a satellite warning signal. This set is the first in a series, a library of music brut which may be applied to moving pictures. These are soundtracks waiting to happen or in some cases already engaged.
This first collection is relatively recent material, of the past 10 years in southern California and the previous Berkeley studio. It includes work done as composer/sound designer, and several pieces were used in TV commercials. This music seeks new life as soundtrack for independent film.
Music based on loop patterns requires some patience. There is a first response, then a growing impatience, but once these reactions pass the real beauty of the sound fields can be perceived and appreciated.
Owen O''Toole is an artist, filmmaker and composer of sound. He studied with Richard Lerman at the Boston Museum School and has hosted radio programs off and on over 25 years. He performs as a member of the projector band Wet Gate and has collaborated with numerous arts luminaries, including Hahn Rowe, Bradley Eros, Caspar Stracke, Matthias Mueller, Schmelzdahin, among others. He lives in Los Angeles, CA.
